Bruising from fibroscan

I've a very tender area on my ribs a few days after my fibroscan, could that be the cause? Has anyone else experienced this?

Yep. I had a sore spot for a day or two. Didn’t actually come up as a bruise but it was tender as I moved or stretched. I don’t have much padding there so maybe that’s why!

That's good to know. I have the same, no bruise just tender and I do have some padding! Many thanks.

I'm in the US and we do here shear wave elastography (type of ultrasound), not fibroscan. The very first time I did it, after being diagnosed in 2016, was excruciatingly painful. She was digging into my ribs so hard, I thought they'd brake. I had bruises that time. I was terrified thinking of the next time. But, the second one, a year later, was totally different, it hurt a little, nothing like the first time. The same tech was doing it. All following shear wave ultrasounds, and I had many since then and at different clinics, were quick and hardly painful. No bruising. Maybe it'll be your experience as well. Good luck!

Thanks Iagra. Your first experience sounds really bad, I'm glad things have improved for you over time. Funnily enough my last ultrasound was similar, the nurse pressed so hard I thought it would do some damage. No lasting tenderness or bruising though. At least we are being well looked after. Good luck to you too!

Shear wave is a fibroscan, I believe. I'm in the US and mine was fibroscan.

From what I understand, shearwave elastography is not exactly the same as Fibroscan, but, similar. I was told 6 years ago that shear wave was more accurate, but, this may not be the case anymore, as fibroscan technology may have progressed. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl... Here is some info. I'll do more research on this. Thanks.

They are a little different. MRE (magnetic resonance) isn’t done with a probe. It is said to be more accurate than fibroscan but also not totally accurate. I had fibroscan which my hep found totally inaccurate. I then had MRI/MRE which again he felt inaccurate but better than fibroscan. He then ordered biopsy to get it right. I’m sure I’ll have no more fibroscans. My hep said he uses it for a guideline only.

I think the point about Fibroscan is that the probe has to be directed at the liver through the gap between 2 ribs. This can be quite tricky for the operator and a feeling for the patient of slight irritation and soreness. William

Thanks William and yes you are correct about the probe. The scan itself was fine, it was only the next day that I felt the tenderness which I have not felt before, hence my question on here.
