foods I can’t tolerate since taking Urso

I’ve been taking Urso for 2 years now. Since then I’ve discovered I can’t eat mushrooms, onions and bell peppers. I use to enjoy these foods often. Now, when eaten I experience severe gas pain, indigestion and diarrhea. Has anyone else experienced this?

This has not been a problem for me, I find these days I feel unwell if I eat red meat or have fried foods. Both of these are now a rareity in my diet.

Thanks for your reply butterflyEi. I am pescatarian ( vegetarian who eats fish). I understand that fatty foods can affect the gall bladder therefore I do watch my intake of fats. It seems though that I’m developing a list of foods that I can’t tolerate since taking Urso.

what is intolerable for me is sugar and fat together , this is a bomb in my stomach

I eat those foods and have never had the slightest problem. Is it possible that it might not be from the Urso?

has your gastroenterologist had you test for GI disorders? I was tested for celiac (negative), SIBO (awaiting results) and IBS. The IBS has been tested by going on a Low FODMAP diet for awhile. It’s an elimination diet, high FODMAP foods are eliminated and then slowly added back in. It has helped me. Garlic, onions and fresh mushrooms are on the list of foods to be eliminated in the first phase. After reintroducing some foods have found out I react badly to mannitol foods which include things like sweet potatoes, watermelon, fresh mushrooms, etc. I’m ok with garlic, onions and fresh mushrooms as long as they are small amounts and cooked. It’s a complicated process but has made a huge difference for me.

green bell peppers are also on the high FODMAP list.

People with PBC have problems absorbing and metabolizing fats because the bile acids can't get from the liver to the small intestine. This is the reason in PBC people have low levels of fat soluble vitamins (A,E,D,K) as well. There is a lot of research pointing to poor gut microbiome health and possible development of PBC so if we had poor gut health and digestion problems before diagnosis it may now be exacerbated by the lack of bile acids. I have also found that since I started on URSO that I have more difficulty with gas, bloating and constipation. My slow transit has progressed to no transit. My liver specialist tells me that I should be having diarrhea from the USO not the opposite. I agree with everyone else here that low FODMAP is something to try. I am also doing a short trial of lower fiber so that I can become more comfortable and think clearly beyond my gut. MY GI suspects that I have IBS but diagnosis is based on symptoms not test results so he is hesitant to diagnose. If I could find a dietician or nutritionist that specializes in liver disease I would definitely consult with them but they are a rarity.

yes the URSODIOL gives me diarrhea for sure. Can’t eat anything high in fat, or a lot of things actually.
