I hope I can get an insight here. I have been diagnosed with PBC for few years and my liver enzymes and ALP have been always high normal range, but 2 days ago, I had a physical and my blood test showed very elevated ALT 216 and AST 111. The rest of the values were normal. The only thing I can think of I took Macrobid 100mg twice daily for a week for UTI a month ago. I am soo concerned and anxious now and waiting to get an ultrasound in 4 days and more blood work.
Have any of you had a spike of liver enzymes right after a month of normal blood test?
Thank you so much for reading my post.

I’ve had raised liver tests a few times over the years and if you looked at my chart it shows a wavy line.
The important thing if this happens is, that your monitored more often for a while to see if they drop back to what is normal for you..
I don’t know about the medication you mentioned but some infections can cause a spike in some blood tests. I’d get the tests repeated monthly for a while to be sure.
My enzymes spiked. Hep dr took me off cholesterol meds I had been taking for years. 6 weeks later, put me on a different one when my numbers went below what they were previously.
Hi, it's good your getting follow up labs to double check what's going on. I started taking a medication for arthritis and my ALT and AST spiked. I stopped the medication and they went back to normal. Might be what's going on. For what it's worth, that's what happened to me. ❤
Thank you all for your replies. I will update you with the results of my blood test and ultrasound. It’s always good to know other PBCers’ experience with their clinical results to better understand what triggers a spike and how it trends down.
Update: I have been getting my liver panel test every other week, since it spiked and thankfully within 8 weeks my ALT and AST are down to 34 and 41, little over the normal range. I’m happy with my numbers, however my mom who has AutoImmune Hepatitis (on Imuran and very low dose of Prednisone) just had elevated liver test too the last few weeks, not as high as mine though, now trending down again. I’m wondering if we had some sort of delayed immune reaction to Moderna vaccine that we both got in March. I just wanted to give you updates in case other PBCers or AIHers have sudden spike as well. 🌻
Same thing. Had blood panel done in January and I was normal. Yesterday got results of alt 119. I am wondering if my recent back injury and pain med and steroid use caused this spike, I’m pretty nervous.
Is the spike on Alkaline Phosphatase or ALT or AST? What are your current spiked numbers on the liver functions? ALP can go up and down a little and if it 119, it’s not so bad.
