In my forties I gave blood twice and the third time was rejected. As I felt as fit asa fiddle I never bothered to find out why and never tried again.

At 60 I was diagnosed with PBC.

Did you give blood knowing you had PBC??? or did you find out you had PBC by giving blood....

No I hadn’t got PBC in my forties, I just decided when I was refused that that was it.

I found out I had PBC when a heart murmur was being checked in 2000.

It does make you wonder if the signs were there in my forties so I am glad I never investigated why I was refused and had many blissful years of ignorance

Hi Baby, I've wondered that. Interested to hear the answer.

Hi BabyK

Your profile does not say which country you live in and I suspect the answer to your question will depend on the country. After 20 plus years of being a blood donor I no longer give blood in the UK but I believe that if you are a rare blood type and there is a need they may take your blood. As to organ donation I asked a question on the NHS Organ Donation face book page and this was their answer :-

"Having a medical condition does not necessarily prevent a person from becoming an organ or tissue donor. A healthcare professional will decide whether some or all organs and tissue are suitable for transplant, taking into account your medical history."

I hope this helps.

How long have you been diagnosed with PBC and was it your decision to stop giving blood or was it refused because of your condition?

diagnosed 2006. gave up during difficult menopause which led to a hysterectomy but would have had to give up by now due age. I was not refused on grounds of PBC as I was not diagnosed until after I had given up being a donor.

As we have a dodgy type of antibody it would seem logical not to donate but this is only my personal thought on it... Sure gp surgery would know... Best wishes cazer.
