Diet
Hi.I’m newly diagnosed too, had my first appointment with the specialist 3 weeks ago & I asked him the same question. He told me that I don’t need to necessarily alter my diet. I’m not overweight & eat a pretty balanced diet already.. he certainly didn’t say there were any foods that I need to avoid. Hope this helps x
Thank you it can be a bit ovetwhelming whelming
I absolutely agree. I had lots of questions, it’s a bit of a shock isn’t it & it all takes time to sink in. Other people may come along & offer you more advice, that’s just what I was told & I guess other doctors may have different opinions on that. 😊
Hello! As far as diet, the GI first saw at diagnosis said be careful sugar & salt. I saw a hepatologist couple months ago that said eat anything I want because my liver is totally functional. However, I will be seeing a different hepatologist soon & I will definitely get second opinion on some things. 🦋
My hepatologist said no diet restrictions as I was already eating well. For example, I try to avoid processed foods. I don’t drink soft drinks, & drink very sparingly alcohol.
No sugar & cream in my coffee, just unsweetened almond milk. My vice is dessert especially ice cream. Every now & then a burger & fries.
Most days though I stick to ground turkey, fish, beans, tofu & chicken breast. I don’t eat raw oysters, but I eat sushi. I specifically ask doctor about sushi & he said it was okay. I only eat it every now & then.
Yes...while I like white bread, I integrate whole grains into my diet. My favorite breakfast is steel cut oatmeal with fruit & walnuts.
Hope this helps.
Diet has nothing to do with PBC. But you should eat healthily for yourself anyway.
You can google liver friendly foods to lessen the load of work it has to do. You will get to know what foods make you uncomfortable.
I've been living with PBC for 15 years and have never been advised what or what not to eat.
Doctors, normally, never advise on diet in general((..Unless you are lucky enough to get a good doctor)..
I never had this luck))..So, just doing homework myself))
There are no diet restrictions is what I'm trying say.
Yes, thats true in some way, i would totally agree that real restriction would apply to allergies or certain food intolerance, but what i meant, that following certain diet can easy many conditions, specially at people with compromised livers. Any food that increases liver load, makes it working harder, wouldnt contribute to the health of already damaged organ.
My Hep said no diet restrictions. She did say to only eat grass fed beef though.
Thank you 😊
My lovely hepatologist just told me to avoid salt. He said no other restriction is needed but I tried to shift from meat to chicken and fish, not to use sugar in coffee or tea and to avoid processed food.
