So my MD said watch your fat salt and sugar intake..... how many gm of fat are we restricted to? He did say no more than 1500 of salt daily and as little sugar as possible but how low fat do we need to stay in on a daily basis?

Hello Pamela4475.

I'd just go by the recommended fat intake daily. Isn't it 25g in the UK (that's where I am).

I was never advised to cut back on anything at diagnosis late 2010. I have always eaten less fat, never much in favour of fried foods but I think with PBC it is important due to bile being needed to break down fat.

There's a good leaflet on diet on the British Liver Trust website. The leaflet though does give more guidelines if you are later stage PBC or have a fatty liver but it is said unless advised then we can adhere to a normal balanced diet.

Coconut oil can be broken down without bile. So I use coconut oil for cooking most the time.

I am not sure why salt is bad. Thought salt is bad for kidney, not liver. Can someone educate me please?

Thanks,

Jane

It's the actual sodium in the salt that's bad for your liver. My heptologist from IU University Hospital says to keep it under 2000mg daily. I've done this by using Mrs Dash seasoning & lite salt which is 50% less sodium that regular table salt. My sodium levels are always low:-)

Hi Pamela

The recommended maximum fat intake is 24g ,salt 6g and sugar 25g. You have to remember how much is hidden in processed foods though. Much better making from scratch yourself, then you have more control.

6g? That would equal 6000 mg and they told me to stay under 1500mg daily and no sugar at all if possible..... quite a difference.. he didn't say how much fat just low fat but 24 is reasonable and low.... good to have a number to shoot for

I truly have a difficult time staying away from sweets. I try & feel that I do ok but, I could probably do a much better job with the way I eat. It's so expensive to eat healthy & it isn't any help when everyone else in the household keeps bringing in junk. It's so frustrating at times
