Fatty liver diet

Hi, I was diagnosed with PBC 6 years ago and taking urso. Was also told I had a fatty liver. My levels are getting worse despite increasing my urso and wondered if following a fatty liver diet would help. Didn’t know one existed till I read someone was on it on this site. Gastro Doctor told me I didn’t need to go on any special diet apart from stopping alcohol. Has it helped anyone and what is it?

Fatty Liver Disease is usually referred to as "NAFLD", the NA being Non-Alcoholic.

NAFLD has a good side in that it can be managed just by lifestyle alone, so those who do choose to eat a healthier diet and exercise normally improve their NAFLD situation.

The biggest questions are "Which counts are rising?" and "Why?".

Catherine, where in the world are you?

I’m in the USA and my liver doc also thought I have fatty liver on top of pbc... he is very strict about my diet and I have lost 30 lbs and am on urso 900 daily. My liver enzymes are all within normal now.... here is what he said to eat and it has made my cholesterol better too: low fat.... low carb... no sugar.... 1 serving of fresh fruit daily but no more.....and exercise daily..... can cheat and say have a slice of pizza once every two weeks but no more frequent than that.... no alcohol. I hope this helps

Thank you. I’m on a low fat diet and do excersize but I have a lot of fruit. Do you know why they said only one piece a day?

I'm following an AIP diet and have seen improvement in my levels.

What does AIP mean

AIP stands for autoimmune protocol. It is a modified Paleo diet. Paleo + no eggs, nuts, seeds, nightshades. The diet works to remove inflammatory foods, maximize nutrient density and restore gut health. I would recommend searching Dr. Sarah Ballantyne for more information. She has a lot of good resources. I have an overlap of AIH and PBC. I've been experimenting with different diets. I've been on AIP (with a few occasional cheat days) for the last 2 months. My Alk P, AST and ALT are the lowest they've been since my diagnosis 1 year ago. I also have a lot more energy when I'm following this diet.

Doctors never tell you to change your diet because people tend to make excuses and argue with them about it. So I went to a dietician who said to stick to more of a Vegan type diet... Dairy has natural bacteria in it which can agitate the immune system setting off an auto-immune attack, so dairy is bad if you have any auto-immune disease... almond milk is the best and vegan non-soy substitutes for your dairy products. Also real butter has animal fat in it as does beef and pork. Animal fat is sludge for the liver. If you have to have meat, try to stick to lean chicken, turkey or fish with low mercury levels. No eggs or soy, and shellfish is too risky as is any alcohol. Try to limit your gluten intake (wheat, rye, and barley). Even if you test negative for Celiac’s Disease (an allergy to gluten), people with liver disease tend to be gluten sensitive anyway. Lastly, try to stick with organic, non-GMO, low sodium, no salt substitutes, low processed sugars, no sugar substitutes, no chemicals, no preservatives, and no artificial colors or flavors. As your liver is compromised and cannot filter correctly, avoid eating the things that are poisoning it to begin with. I have PBC, but it would make sense that any liver disease would be a similar type of diet.

Hi, thank you. I do have PBC as well. Do you know why they said no eggs?

My guess would be the possibility of salmonella contaminates as the inside of the egg can be contaminated before the shell is formed. Of course, any poultry could contain harmful bacteria such as salmonella, listeria, and campylobacter, so it must be fully cooked. Also no sushi of any kind. Raw fish is too risky.

I dont think the eggs question is clear cut. The link above may be helpful, and there may be other things on that site that are useful for you too.

Thank you. That’s reassuring. I keep my own chickens and it would have been a shame not to have been able to eat their eggs.
