Upper right abdomen pain, discomfort.

Hi guys,

I was diagnosed with PBC 14 yrs ago, (i'm 65) and without meds remained symptom free until about a year ago. Started to get lots of digestive probs, and was investigated further. Some elevated bloods, mainly ALP, and still rising. Fibroscan shows 9.6, no cirrhosis, varaices, itching.

The MRCP scan showed a small narrowing of the common bile duct, so they want to put a stent in, and am waiting for an appointment.

But in the last 2 months, i've had what i call a "flare up", for want of a better description. Pain in my upper right abdomen, rather than just discomfort. It seems to take a few days calm down, and makes me feel really miserable and unwell. Was wondering if i should see my GP again. Does anyone else get this pain? Is it something common with PBC?

Feeling more worried than usual.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Elianan

I don’t have any answer as I’m new to this disease. It’s good news that you could be symptom free with no liver damage for years. Can I asy why didn’t you get meds?

Upper right quadrant pain is mentioned as a symptom, or there at least some who suffer from it. I get it periodically but I don’t have any answers and mine is not really that painful it’s just there in the background. I feel it more if I’ve over indulged, and my digestion seems slow. If it’s a new symptom for you, do get it checked by your doctors we can get other things and it may not be related.

I think it would be a good idea to contact the hospital consultant who suggested the stent. If you are in pain they may decide to do the procedure sooner. Hope you feel better soon

I agree with the above comments, especially to get more feedback, and to try to speed up the procedure.

I would also want to know why no Meds. If you were definitively diagnosed (ie, at least 2 out of 3 of the recognised diagnostic criteria, for PBC, present) with PBC, then Meds should be given to slow the progress.

Hope all goes well and treatment takes place soon.
