This happened to me too, right around the time I was diagnosed and when I wasn’t taking Urso yet. It was like my body’s ability to process alcohol just went away. I got very drunk after just one glass of wine.

Can you tolerate it now? I’m waiting for a fibroscan, have you had one or told what stage you were Michi1

Joanne, I can tolerate it now but I am careful to drink a lot less than I did in the past. I have had two fibroscans and am due for the annual update this month. My first one was classified as Stage 2. The second had a lower reading than the first and was categorized as Stage 1.

I think I’m stage 2 but I will have to wait till scan , I’ve suffered for years with gastric and gall bladder problems 😢

Joanne, there is no way you can know from labs what stage you are. Especially at early stages the only way they can stage the disease is with a fibroscan or a biopsy, and even those things are questionable since they just look at a tiny location in your liver.

One thing you might want to consider. About 40% of PBCers have celiac disease. I would venture to guess an even higher percentage are gluten intolerant but not officially "celiac". My doctor waited to test for celiac disease until I had cut out gluten on my own for about a year, so my test isn't valid, but I know from an elimination diet that once reintroduced it made me REALLY sick. My whole life, I never understood why beer made me really drunk compared to wine, and I stopped drinking beer in college because of that.

I no longer eat (or drink) anything with gluten. Guess what most beers are ... liquid gluten! Many other alcoholic beverages are also distilled from gluten grains: wheat, barley, rye. If you still eat gluten you might want to be tested for gluten intolerance immediately and see how that impacts you.

Yes I have been tested for ceoliac and it was negative but I do have intolerance to gluten confirmed after antibody test. I don't drink anything other than disaranno now and started gluten free 4 weeks ago I also have other intolerances, cows milk and tap water

I haven't had that reaction though I don't know what stage I'm at and I assume it is early for me. I did, however have that reaction to alcohol when I was pregnant the first time prior to finding out about my pregnancy.
