A few years ago I had both, one after the other. I didn't have any sedation and stopped the colonoscopy when it got to a certain point as it was painfull going round a corner. Make sure you have the sedation to make you more comfortable. It is not the most pleasant thing to go through but very necessary to see what is going on. It doesn't take long and is just routine for the doctors.

I was sedated. The worse was having to take the laxatives and diet

I agree the prepartion part was the worst. So long ago I completely forgot how bad that was. Kept me running to bathroom all the time. The rest was fine

Last year

The medication for the colonoscopy made me sick so my advice ( to me as well for the future) is go in a liquid diet a couple of days before so you can get a good result regardless

I had both together a few years ago without sedation, painful but It was just about manageable as it took very little time to do. However I would not do it again without sedation. I had a home enema kit, so I didn't have any medication take or diet to think about.

I had a more recent endoscopy with sedation and can't remember anything about it much better.

Good day!!

I had both done at the same time last April. Sedated! Cant imagine without.

Sometimes the gas bothers you more than anything else after and that can be painful.

Good luck!!

Sandie1. I had both years ago. Was sedated. For me it was as they say a walk in the Park. The biopsy of the liver was bit sore. Please do not stress. It is going to be okay, you will see

Sandie 1.Sorry I forgot to say the preparation part i.e. laxatives was the worst. Was 9 years ago.

Thanks for all your comments.. well appreciated. I have to start the count down tomorrow lol. Only white fish, rice, water tea with out milk, next day same then in the afternoon take sachet of a form of laxative drinking plenty of water, then 2 hours before I have the treatment an enema to make sure your "empty", by then I will be glad to get it over with!!!!!and get back to normal.

Sandie1 As I said previously the 'before part'' is the worst . The procedure itself not bad. Thinking of you

Try not to worry Sandie1. The GI team will look after you. I opted not to have sedation for the Endoscopy but you have to be strong and brave to endure this; it only lasted 30 seconds; had they told me that at the beginning, it would have helped me, because it hurt more than it being uncomfortable (I didnt gag, nor did I breathe) and I was glad afterwards that I didnt have the sedation. Whilst sitting in the small ward after the procedure, there were 3 ladies dopey and feeling nauseas which I had no option but to see. You dont get medals for bravery though, it is purely your own choice. I also had the colonscopy without medication; the team wouldnt want you to suffer in any way, so go with what you think is best for you.

I had a gastroscopy last week, afraid I am such a whimp had the sedation, even though the doctor tried to dissuade me. Can't imagine having it done without!

Yes, I recently had both done, on the first of May. You will be put to sleep, be thankful. It's the best sleep ever. I have a colonoscopy done about once a year. Colon cancer runs in my family & I also have ulcerative colitis (UC). I have the EGD done about every six months because of my esophageal varicies. Best of luck to you. Im sure everything will go fine. My friend always says to think of it as if it's just time for another tune up lol. Unfortunately you'll be a bit weak for a couple days after.

I just went through everyone's response & I couldn't imagine going through this without being put to sleep. Staying awake has never been a option. I never knew anyone could opt out of sedation.

I’ve had both done with sedation. Asked for plenty sedation for gastroscope and it was ok!

I had both endoscopy/colonoscopy done together and had no problems. I was awake but had been given something they called Twilight for some type of sedation. Did not feel any pain or discomfort and had no problems. Good luck!

Yes I had both last year. Agree the preparation laxatives are the worst bit. They put sedative in back of my hand and I don't remember much about it so please don't worry. In my case they found Coeliac disease and I am now feeling good on my gluten free diet. Good luck. 😃

I have never even heard of anyone having this done without sedation. I live in the US and they don't even ask. I'm assuming that the people who said they had no sedation are in the U.K? Around here, you get an IV of fluids a few minutes ahead of time and then the sedation is put into the tube that is already running into your veins. The current popular choice of medication is propafol (sp?) which is a very short-acting drug. You awaken very quickly and without much, if any, drowsiness or confusion. You are not allowed to drive yourself home. You must have someone with you to take you home (not a cab) I absolutely hate the preparation for the colonoscopy but the procedure and recovery are nothing. For just an endoscopy, it's easy - just no eating for 8 hours before the procedure. Piece of cake!

Hi, had four endoscopies..sedation and throat spray...not the best procedure but very important Also a colonscopy which was painful but they gave me gas and air.....it was the laxative that was worse! Good luck

I’ve had both long before PBC. My GI gives what they call “amnesia” drug through iv & I knew nothing about procedure. Woke up fully dressed drinking a coke. You’ll be fine.
