Itching Head

Hi, Im going mad with an itching head, also my face.

Its only been like this for a week or so, I dont normally suffer from the itch as most of you do. I thought of head lice and have tried to sort it but it cant be that.

Anyone else had an itchy head and face? - I never thought to ask where people itch!

thanks Kandiepat

Hi There, yes, I suffer from an itchy head, even spoke to the doctor about it and was given a lotion to use, she didn't say it might be down to PBC though, but that dosn't surprise me , I hadn't thought about it being related, but now you mention it. The lotion didn't make any difference

Hello kandiepat.

Your head itch does sound like one of the itch symptons of PBC. I have an itchy head from time to time. Yes my face itches at times as does my ears!

with me it seems to be my arms inside elbow. Late at night my feet, toes and ankles itch! I also get the itch on my back that is annoying.

I find with having PBC now I cannot wear a cap outdoors even in winter. OK throwing a hood on a coat up as it is loose but not a hat now.

I find for me I feel better washing my hair alternatively. I use shampoo and conditioner (tend to buy the ones without SLS, parabens, etc) and then 2 days later I just tend to use warm water. I did buy a tea tree hair detangler spray aimed at children last year, find that is great for using a bit to get a brush through my hair on the days I just use the water.

The only place I really itch is my scalp.

Hi Kandipat

I had an itchy head for months pre-diagnosis and asked my hairdresser she had no answer for it (I know why now). My itching started innmy feet, it was horrendous, I was treated with steroid cream, my bloods were high at the time too but my gp didn't make the connection. Now I'm on Questran which eases the itching but I still get it. It's embarrassing at times. I had it on my arms I put it down to dry skin also. I have PBC.

I was suffering with this Dr diagnosed seborrheic dermatitis, yet another auto immune condition, I have special shampoo & must use the lather on my face. He said just for 6 weeks but I'm now on it for 5 months as it contains it but it starts again as soon as I stop it. No other hair products are allowed not even hair spray. X

Hi , I have been managing my head itch for years, I know what it's like. What I do is buy a bottle of Nizoral (ketoconazole?) shampoo and use it for a while according to the instructions. I drink plenty of fluids and have early nights. This really helps me. I also put a bit on the sponge in the shower and do myself all over with it at the same time as doing my hair. I find that I only need to do this two or three times a year. My GP prescribed some sort of emollient but I was horrified when I read on the label 'for senile itch' and I threw it away.

Best wishes

I also have a problem knowing whether my itch is PBC or not. Mine is on my face and also in my throat which is a bit odd. It's more of a prickly feeling. Have you experienced a single hair tickling your face? It's like that, but all over my face, and i drives me mad. The itch inside my throat of course can't be reached and I find myself trying to use my tongue to alleviate it which gets me some strange looks from other people!

Any wise words or advice appreciated - thanks

Hi Swinstan, yes a single hair describes it perfectly - I also woke up with the same itch in my ear yesterday - I got up and put a blob of coconut oil in my ear and let it melt. I havent had trouble since!

I can imagine what an itchy tongue must be like. I have some ginger that I dried for that awful cough one gets in the night -I keep it in a jar by my bed. Maybe chewing on that (it lasts ages and you can keep it in the side of your cheek) will deaden the itchy feeling. hope this helps, Kandiepat

Thanks for the reply. That's reassuring. At least I'm not going mad. GP suggested an allergy - maybe due to fungal spores, but that was before I was diagnosed with PBC. At the moment it's a nuisance rather than unbearable and I'm hoping it will stay at that, although it does seem that PBC symptoms are definitely unpredictable.

Hi, I am having a weird feeling in my head. It's like in two different spots on my scalp there is a something crawling. It's been three weeks now. I tried head lice creams, combs and anti dandruff shampoo and coconut oil but all in vein. I am so going mad with it. My husband see nothing crawling in those spots. It's also itchy.

Hi Mg40, Im wondering if it is dry skin, dry atmosphere or changing temperatures. Im 74 and have Sjogrens as well, so it could be not drinking enough water, dehydration. Im experimenting and I will post if I find out!! Kandiepat

Thanks for your reply. I will try to drink plenty of water and see it gets better. I had this feeling after my liver biopsy.

Oh yes that's me too. I put the saran lotion on my hands and rubbed my scalp found a little relief, same with face and ears.
