Upset stomach
Hello Kimmy1972.
I had initial side-effects on starting urso back in Dec 2010. I started having heartburn and did think the itch I had was a bit worse than it was prior to starting urso.
I also felt I had a bit of a bloated tummy that I didn't have before but within the first few months of urso it all settled. No heartburn or bloating, the itch changed over time and these days it is confined mainly to night which back in 2010 it was 24/7.
I did become constipated after taking urso that I never was prior. That has persisted at times but I have adjusted myself dietary-wise and though I always had enough 'roughage' prior I find a b it more nowadays helps.
Some taking urso develop diarrhoea but I never have.
Thank you peridot that has settled my mind a little. Do you find with your pbc you can't sleep through the night and exhausted through the the day. I am a student nurse and sometimes can't keep my open through lecture which really concerns me . Is there anything I could take herbal to make me have more energy I have a good healthy diet and juice 3 times a day x
Hello again Kimmy1972.
Well I find I can't sleep right through the night (wake several times during the night but get the odd night I might not) but it is due to itching at night as opposed to anything else I think.
I am 51 and started going through the menopause in 2013 but haven't yet had many symptons of it. I have had a few hot flushes but nothing to really bother about.
I find I get tired from around 3p.m. on some days due to broken sleep at night.
I find that mornings when I can get up early (around 7a.m) I can sleep better at night as I never retire to bed before almost midnight due to knowing if I went earlier I'd still have the same problem of not being able to sleep or for long enough so would have to endure the itch even longer. I find the secret if I can call it that to getting through feeling tired is to keep on the go. I couldn't sit down after noon and not do anything for some time, like yourself I would find myself falling asleep. I found myself falling asleep enroute to Somerset (I am in the UK) last month as the drive was around 5hrs and being on the motorway and the monotony of it, just nodded off (good job I am not at the wheel!).
I have in the past tried experimenting with milk thistle but I started taking it for a short spell to see if the blood improved a few years ago and it was before UK legislation came into being. After this where companies needed a licence to manufacture the strength of the milk thistle went right down by mgs and costings up. I did think at one time it was making a difference only to the LFTs but after coming off it awhile I got the same good results I had been having. I then gave it another go and have to say for myself it made no difference so I couldn't see the point in taking it.
Unfortunately if you have fatigue in PBC (I did in 2010 but at some point during 2011 it vanished) then it seems to be one of the 2 commonest symptons of it (itching is the other).
Apparently there is some new drug trial for fatigue in PBC but I am not sure how that is progressing or if good when available.
I find these days I feel a bit more whacked when it is that woman's 'time of the month', always have and there is nothing one can really do about it.
I could not sleep at night due to the itching, but now I am lucky if I sleep 5 hours per night after taking S5 sleeping pill. I was hesitant to go on sleeping pill, but the dr. said to rest was more important than no sleep. I am nearly 75. I also take vitamins for energy, and try and eat healthy an no GLUTEN
Hi Kimmy1972
Even before I was diagnosed I used to get reflux but since I take Omeprazole which helps regulate my tummy. I now take the Ursofalk at bedtime (this was recommended in one of the Bear Facts Magazines published by the PBC Foundation). I take 1000mg a day.
You have said to Peridot that you have three juices a day. If these are not the home made juices so popular today then you may be having more sugar in the diet than you mean to have.
It seems from reading other contributions on this website that although some people trial things like milk thistle there is no real benefit and some say that their health professional has told them not to take any supplements.
Pace yourself where you can, rest when you can and if you feel it appropriate speak to your lecturer and ask them to suggest ways that will help you to stop drifting off in the lecture halls.
best wishes
I had to have my dose lowered so I could tolerate the symptoms
I am sorry to hear that. Sadly I has same problem. I gave it 3 months but had to stop. But not the case for all. Hopefully should settle. I have other health issues that cause IBS. Good luck
