However; I understand from my research that B12 should be taken with a full B complex. I am now thinking of adding Folic Acid at 400mcg daily and if that is found to be benificial, I will consider adding B5 in order to complete the full B complex. My problems is my GP's opinion is that unless I have Berriberri I don't need the B complex, but I have found B12 tablets alone do not work for me. I now seek expert advice please.
By way of further parameters, my Hb is 15.9 - My Serum B12 is 131 - Serum Folate is 8.7 and My Red Cell Folate is 271. My fasting Glucose is 5.7
My U’s & E’s are all very good. - Free Thyroxine is 12.9pmol/l - TSH at 0.82 uU/mi
My fasting Lipids show a CHD risk factor of 4.6 and my Liver Functions are all good.

You are one lucky person to have been able to naturally take up B12 with added B vitamins!! Its allways better to add vitamins a natural way, so if you wish to raise your folate levels why not try eating more veg and things like asparagus etc?
My Daughter was put on high dosis of multy B vitamins (and iron and calcium) when diagnosed with B12 def..it made no difference at all to her serum B12 levels 4 months later, so she had to go onto injections.
Many thanks for your reply, time and interest, I am now left to wonder until I get a definative answer as to should I take Folic Acid whilst I'm still trying to raise my B12 levels, will this mask the level readings, or will it be of futher benifit, I have no wish to screw up the blood readings.
Many thanks and best regards Turbo
Hi Turbo,
I am no expert...just a person with pa, and can not give you a defenite answer...but yes, you will screw up blood results if you start self medicating...just common sense.
I was told by a heamatologist that if you add high dosis of one vitamin, then you screw up a natutal balance in the body (nearly all B vitamins need each other to be metabolised say) and it therefore can be useful to just take a multy vitamin, so you have a reasonably balnced supply of everything say.
I hope this helps, I personally would not self medicate if you are still undiagnosed, and having further tests. I'd only selfmedicate if you have exhausted all tests available to you and have not achieved a satisfactory solution to you problems..I hope I make sense..
Many thanks for your reply, I have taken TTG - Intrinsic Factor and P.C.Antibody tests and they are all NEG. I then tried B12 alone as prescribed by my GP and this did not work very well. My own research showed conections between B3 activating B6 which in turn helps with the absorption of B12. Further research in collaboration with well very qualified colleagues, has bought me to a licenced tablet produced by Actavis, that contains B1 - B2 - B3 and B6 in ideal proportions, taking this, along with 50mcgs of B12 twice daily, took my B12 level from 131 to 478 in less than 8 weeks and made me feel much better overall. Further research has stated that B12 should only be taken as part of a full B complex whenever possible, thus I added Folic Acid at 400mcgs as taken prior to pregnancy, this has not been well tolerated even when the dose was dropped to 200mcgs, I have therefore stopped this input due to side effects. The only aspect left to try is B5 and of course I do suffer from symptoms which are reported to be helped by these other B vitamins, whilst of course I also wish to maintain the Vit. B balance aspect. I am at present awaiting an appiontment with a Consultant Heamatologist, whilst at the same time working with my Consultant Neurologist in attempting to find an answer to my Facial Migraine problems, my G.P. is not a fan of the B complex idea and is simply stating that if I don't have Berriberri, then I din't need need the other B vitamins.
Hope this puts your mind at rest regarding self medication aspects.
