I became very ill with food poisoning in Portugal approx 3 weeks ago. Saw 3 drs who all prescribed probiotics. In the end I spent all day in Faro hospital having a 4 hour drip and CT scan. No sample taken. I lost half a stone . Back in UK tested and had campylobacter . Scan showed nothing. Blood tests showed low platelets 73(157-371) and high MPV 12.7(9.1-11.9)Advice re B12 which normall 1x week . When well try to take iron but causes problems -folic acid the same Still not well and not sure whether to start B12 yet. Am on clarythromycin half way through.Blood test also showed signs of infection. No surprise there. Any advice much appreciated. Mouth now becoming sore at sides and tender tongue. Thanks

Sue

I don't have any recommendations, I just wanted to say that I hope that you get better soon. I caught campylobacter poisoning decades ago - the birds had contaminated the doorstep milk by pecking through the foil lids to get to the cream! It was not a nice experience and I ended up in hospital, as to start with they thought I had appendicitis. Thankfully, a course of antibiotics put me right. I will no longer get doorstep milk, as I never want to live through that pain again!

Thank you.Not the best holiday!

I got a double whammy of campylobacter and Giardia at camp and my goodness it was horrible (I can’t say the worst thing ever anymore as this B12 crap has it beat, hands down).

I hope you feel better soon!! I think if your body is used to having B12 weekly, I would definitely keep up with that schedule (or increase it, as you use more when sick!). Do you have an ongoing folate deficiency?

Also, isn’t iron the worst to try and get numbers up? I really struggle!

Iron gives me diarrhoea so will miss that for a while! I don’t know about folic but get tested when I see the dr. Thanks for your reply

Iron also gives me the runs (and doctors have a hard time believing me since it’s meant to be the opposite).

Folic is usually tested co-currently with B12 so if you are on injections, the doctor might see the high result and refuse to renew your prescription (it’s been happening a lot I hear)

Ooh poor you. Lion's mane fungus is supposed to help against such things. You can get a dose in Cheerful Buddha Cocoa. You'll need your B12 to recover from anything.

Been there, done that, got the T shirt. [I got mine in Cyprus]. It took a while to recover, including a course of antibiotics. I suspect that it took longer to recover from them than the campylobacter. It was an 'interesting experience all round'. I think the campylobacter was worse than the giardia from Tenerife, but both increased the use of bathroom stationery by a factor of several-fold!

Good luck, keep in touch with us.

Not the best holidays when you end up more time in the bathroom than out enjoying yourself. Thank you. Am feeling improvement and stopped abs today so 🤞get back to normal

I can sympathize with your situation! Once your gut becomes compromised, it is so hard to get back on track. I am still trying to heal my gut after having the Delta variant of COVID and working in a moldy office for several years.

I would say that aside from my B12 injections, probiotics have been the most helpful for me. I hope you can get it sorted and are feeling better soon!

Thank you. Finished antibiotics today and did B12 yesterday and feel as though on road to recovery!
