B12 consistently high, however stopped injections 10 years ago

Hi, I'm not sure if anyone has the same problem? Each time I have had my bloods check in the last 1.5-2 years, they have mentioned that my B12 is extremely high.

I had 6 x B12 injections back in December 2013, however this is nearly 10 years ago now!

Is it possible that my B12 levels would STILL be showing high after 10 years??? Or not a chance after that long?

Thank you.

As you are not supplementing with B12 , this high reading should be investigated . It can be a sign of a liver problem . You dont say how high the reading is . But as they remark on it , further investigation is called for . I would insist on this without delay .

HI Sara,

Apparently.........

How long does it take for B12 levels to drop?

Stores of vitamin B12 in the body can last around 2 to 5 years without being replenished, so it can take a long time for any problems to develop after a dietary change.

I wouldn't have thought after ten years that your high levels are still to do with the 6 injections you had !

I agree with wedgewood with regard to the need to get these high levels further investigated.

I agree. Surely the G.P who ordered the bloods should give you further tests going on the current results if B12 extremely high..

Also will look at all results to get a picture if what's going on.

My serum B12 was high although I had high homocysteine and MMA so 100% B12 deficient. I reside in the USA. Went to UCLA Endocrinologist out of concern as they are the very best. Endo said the high B12 is likely inactive B12 and since my liver enzymes were fine he was not concerned and said to keep taking B12 injections. High B12 can indeed point to liver (hepatic/cirrhosis) issues so if your liver enzymes are also elevated then get to a specialist STAT. If not it is possible you have inactive B12 floating around and should have more specific labs as I did (homocysteine and MMA). Curious...why did you have injections before and why did you stop? If you needed injections at one point you likely still do.
