Antibiotic for UTI

I have been prescribed nitrofurantoin from my surgery for my UTI. Bearing in mind they don’t acknowledge that I have a b12 deficiency, should I be taking them? I did mention it to the triage nurse I spoke.

I started B12 injections a couple of weeks ago, so hoping it won’t cause me any problems, but would like anyone’s perspective on it. I only have another 4 doses to take and I think the infection has gone anyway as my urine dip test showed no sign of infection.

This site is beyond a blessing. I recently had a UTI treated with nitrofurantoin and had no idea it impacted B12 although during the time I was taking it I noticed B12 def symptoms subtly re-appearing. Had no idea and good to know since apparently menopause is known to increase frequency of UTI's. Great fun. Thank you as always!

Hi Chicken44,

Take Nackapan's advise and finish the course. You might take a bit of a decline with regard your B12, my advice would be to give yourself extra B12 to help with recovery if you feel it needed.

It sounds as if the antbiotics are doing the job of clearing the UTI. It might be wise to take some good probiotics once you have finished the course.

Already taking probiotics - a capsule, Symprove and a good apple cider vinegar. So throwing everything at my gut to try and improve it.

Many other countries prescribe probiotics after a course of antibiotics so keep doing what your doing. I take the symprove too. 👍

Sounds like your on the ball with putting the good guys back in your gut.

Hope you feel better soon.

With any antibiotic, you must always finish the course.

I used to have regular UTI’s hence antibiotics needed as I have a permanent urine catheter. It was partially resolved by utilising a silver oxide coated one (silver has antibacterial properties). But the inserted tip would get blocked by calcium deposits due to the alkalinity of its environment which created retention a potential for infection problems. I was advised to drink more acidic drinks so I drank Robinson’s Fruit & Barley, orange flavour (because I like this best). I haven’t had an infection for over a year now. I have also taught myself how to make my own Kefir recently, which I am sure will also restore my stomach health if any long term antibiotic issues have occurred through long term use of antibiotics.

It's a bad idea to stop taking an antibiotic once you have started (unless you are forced to stop because you are allergic to it). There may be some germs left, and the ones still there are the ones most resistant to that antibiotic. If you stop now, you risk having the infection blossom again but this time with bacteria that are harder to treat due to more resistance to the antibiotic.

Nitrofurantoin was what caused my super crash. But it’s also important to treat UTI’s. This time do a few more injections. Next time ask for a different antibiotic.

I agree. I was so poorly on Nitrofurantoin it’s now on my allergy list.

I’m given penicillin which I seem to tolerate well with my B12 injections.
