B12 and fatty Liver

Good day friends.

I always though B12 helps with the liver issues.

Can anyone comment on this study?

Says high levels can cause fatty liver

I have been given to understand that a high level vitamin B12 reading , occurring without any supplementation can indicate a problem with the liver . So the liver problem causes the high vitamin B12 reading , not vice-versa .

Thanks. That makes sense

I’ve just googled it and it was confirmed that the liver disease caused the liver to leak b12 into the blood serum , so raising it to above normal .

Thanks for looking into this.

I'm interested to see the replies to this, I have a fatty liver and very low B12. Regular B12 injections and I dont have PA

How do you know you do not have PA? Some of the test have high false negative rates. Why do you need regular injections and have low B12 if you do not have PA?

Misty58 profile image
Misty58 in reply toHockey_player

I have had every test possible for PA, all were normal. I just don't absorb B12 and tablets don't work. It's quite common to be B12 deficient without having PA

Hockey_player profile image
Hockey_player in reply toMisty58

I don't think it is? I suspect you have PA but the tests did not show it. People without PA who have B12 in their diets can get B12 from the food they eat.

Without wishing to be rude, I think my GP and hospital consultant know best 🤗

You should read more about PA. The odds are very high you have it. If you read on these pages, you will see a lot of horror stories about doctors not diagnosing PA or treating it properly.

I had slightly fatty liver and B6 resolved it. Which is known to be the case but not by very many physicians.

Are there any studies that associate B6 with fatty liver disease?

Vitamin B6 administration significantly ameliorated hepatic fat accumulation. As an inexpensive agent with few side effects, vitamin B6 could be a novel therapeutic agent for the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Googled............

Hi Wiz. What dose did you take? I've got indications of fatty liver and would like to do something about it before it gets any worse. Thanks.

I was taking 50 mg twice a day which resolved my peripheral nephropathy and my fatty liver. P-5-P seems to be the best form to take. See B6 Paradox

I agree with Wedgwood, it is a symptom of NAFLD when there is no supplementation of b12 and have always felt GPs confuse this with the high levels after injections. It's a shame serum levels after injections was not included in the NICE review as it would have clarified the fact.

the report shows a correlation from the stats and is suggesting an area for further research

There are even suggestions that raising Vitamin b12 levels can be useful in treating fatty liver disease:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

However there are other studies which say it makes no difference:

The study seemed to be concentrated on the genetic implications of high serum levels in Greeks, Turks, and Iranians. There was no mention of PA or difference between oral supplementation and injections. I was taking high levels of oral B12 long before I diagnosed with PA. I had a moderate to severe case of NAFLD that was not improved by dietary and exercise changes. After I was diagnosed with PA and I began an aggressive daily SI routine, my fatty liver had completely returned to normal in less than 2 years. Correlation? Yes. Causation? Not proven but strongly suggested.

I have NAFLD and B12 not PA but I’ve also got FND , FCD neurological issues. So I get IBS and other stuff wrong with me. They put me on injections every 3 month but got put onto them every two months now they are putting me back to every 3-4 months be interesting to read the comments
