B12 injections and liver enzymes

Hi, just wanting to check that can B12 injections cause liver damage? Since starting injections 5 months ago my liver enzyme count in the labs has tripled. It’s still in the threshold but it did make me worry. I’ve always had a low liver enzyme count - so now I’m wondering has that been due to the fact I was B12 deficient - and now my liver enzymes are rising as I’m healing thanks to the injections? The maximum threshold is 35 and mine is 30. It was 10 before the injections. Should I be worried? I also have put on quite a bit of weight during these past 5 months (and I get it all in my stomach) and so I am aware that that can also cause this. And I haven’t also been able to exercise due to my neuro symptoms as it wipes me out for a few days. I don’t drink any alcohol so can’t be that. Thank you so much for any advice 🙏🏻

I know of no connection.

Some doctors seem to think that high B12 can cause liver damage. In fact, it is the other way round. Liver damage can cause high B12.

Is your folate OK?

Ok thank you. I have been thinking about my diet for the past 5 months, and it hasn't been as healthy as usual (well, I used to be underweight and live off only vegetables, which is why I developed these deficiencies in the first place :( ) - and I've eaten a lot more greasy things, salt and sugar.. I have also been taking so many supplements as I have many deficiencies) - which can't be good on the liver.. ? My folate has always been very good (the only thing I don't have a deficiency in- and I think my rabbit food habits explain that one) way in the upper third in the threshold.

Hi, I don’t know if this relates to your liver results. I’ve been researching the keto diet, and some of the info I’ve come across relates to how the liver processes things. You’ll need to check this further as my knowledge is very limited. Apparently sticking to only blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and blackberries for fruit intake is better for your liver. My reason for doing this doesn’t relate to my liver directly, I’ve come off insulin after 8 years (type 2 diabetes) and am reducing my overall blood sugar (HbA1c). Main sources of info for me on YouTube: Dr Jason Fung and Dr Sten Ekberg. Ekberg has a video ‘how to reverse fatty liver disease’ might be useful to you?

All the best 😊
