Magnesium…..Are these 2 the same or different ?……..£8.99 vs £1.00

I have tried Magnesium which I bought from a Supermarket for £1.00, then a friend recommended Magnesium which was from Holland & Barret which I bought for £8.99 (Both are 90 tablets). I’m wondering if both are exactly the same.

Please see pictures.

The Left one is H&B and the Right one is from local Supermarket.

I don’t know how to include more than 1 picture in a post, picture 2 is below in reply’s.

Both say 375 milligrams of magnesium as magnesium oxide. And some other stuff to make is possible/easy to form tablets.

One of the cheapest and least useful forms of magnesium. It's major effect is often reported to be laxative and the absorption of magnesium into the body is poor to very poor.

But they are pretty much identical. And you have just successfully pointed out why Holland and Barrett are so often dismissed. They might sell some OK products but you have to know what you want and be able to identify them.

Others will likely pile on to suggest what forms might be better.

Hi Helvella, “One of the cheapest and least useful forms of magnesium”…..I was told Magnesium is good for anxiety and helps with sleep, so do you know of a better/best form of Magnesium.

(I believe in the past I’ve either seen or posted a video by Dr Berg on YouTube) , he goes through the different types of Magnesium and what it does……but I don’t have the energy to go through the video again at the moment.

There are many members who know far more than do I about magnesium. I'd rather not start from my position of ignorance - better that some of them reply.

It might take a while, but someone will come along and make some suggestions.

If you're looking for laxative effects, then citrate or oxide may be useful. If instead you're trying to increase your Magnesium intake, Magnesium Glycinate is best for absorption but you might also consider Magnesium L-Threonate or Magnesium Taurate. The Glycinate/Bisglycinate form should be easy enough to find. I'm not sure whether absorption would be better with 200mg twice a day or 350mg once a day. Plenty of options.

I disagree with Brad that everyone should take a Magnesium supplement as you can get twice the Magnesium RDA with a proper human diet. 😁

But a couple hundred mg of extra Magnesium is not going to do any harm, especially if your diet lacks good Magnesium sources or there are absorption issues.

Agree exactly and the other forms you mention are spot on - I could only remember citrate off top of my head without looking it up !

Hi what Helvella meant was - there are numerous forms pf Mg and this is not the best - Mag citrate is better !

I take a daily dose of magnesium citrate 600mg. I'm pretty sure it helps reduce my migraines (they got worse when i stopped it for a while).I'm a cheapskate, so i won't pay for the more expensive salt forms.

Looks like the same stuff. The £7.99 saved would pay for something else...

No-one seems to have mentioned 'Epsom Salts' [Magnesium Sulphate] but once the stuff is dissolved, it's ionised so the Magnesium ions will be just as available. Beware overdose and maintain an adequate supply of 'bathroom stationery'!

Soaking feet in an Epsom salt solution works well for some!

Avoids all direct gut issues.

Sit with your feet in a bowl of Epsom Salts, relaxing with a glass. Having spent the £7.99 saved on a bottle of passably acceptable white, or red, [providing you drink the stuff] but don't overdo it on either...

Hi there - I found out just in time though - that bathing in it can cause an adrenal crisis if you are susceptible to adrenal insufficiency - Mg is well absorbed by the skin and has to be metabolised by the kidneys ! We used to use Epsom salts for all sorts in the 'old days' - I was given half a pint of it to dry up my breast milk way back when and was on the loo for days - that nurse did not like me !

A good cautionary tale.

Yes, go gently, start very dilute and for a short time.

Hi it can drop blood pressure which is the negative adrenal response - so dizziness - slow heart beat etc. can also be attributed to Mg over exposure.

When I started using magnesium I bough Epsom Salts and put in a nice hot bath - weird dizziness, light-headed and palpitations ensued. Found that it was too much Epsom and too hot water, so progressed to foot bath of warm water and less Epsom, which helped me sleep, kept bowels regular and generally felt better, but made skin very dry after a time. Now use Better You sensitive oil spray on skin, and it is magical stuff (for me). Never go out without some, in case of emergency. So 'low and slow' highly recommended, but worth trying for those who haven't.

Hi there - exactly it is quite dangerous actually - I was going to recommend it for my adult Son for his back problems a few years back but he is also a low adrenal person so was horrified I could have made things worse. Yes I use Better you Spray it is amazing and has got me out of many a painful situation when my muscles misbehave.
