Hi, could anyone tell me what the doctor means by bone profile? Recently had tests for B12 deficiency, got a telephone call a few days later asking me to come back in for them to do more tests. Said my bone profile was low, and mentioned something about potentially low vitamin d. Apparently my b12 is normal (359) still waiting on intrinsic factor test to come back. Thanks

Bone profile?
Hi Kayls32,
So, the most important things with these blood tests are not your symptoms. Now, the cut off levels are set at pretty low levels. 359 mg/L tells me nothing of whether you have pins and needles, numb feet, shooting pains in your arms or tinnitus.
Please get copies of your blood results and notes.
A bone profile is your Calcium, your Phosphate, Albumin, Alkaline phosphatase. Plus, you mention vitamin D deficiency. So, it is worth being checked for the most common illnesses such as H.pylori and Coeliac Disease.
Is there any family history of Autoimmune Diseases, keeping a symptoms diary can be very helpful as well.
It means you may develop oesteoporsosis ,I have severe oesteoporsosis ,every time I fall I fracture
Thank you Myratom,
I am sorry to read you have osteoporosis. A family member is very similar to you. The important word is may.
As a Health Professional, I use basic language. I read people’s questions carefully and answer them appropriately. Kayls32 has asked,
Hi, could anyone tell me what the doctor means by bone profile.
Her doctor has ordered more tests. In the future, IF Kayls32 were concerned about osteoporosis and/or her doctor was, a DEXA scan would be offered.
I do choose my wording wisely on these websites because people can be particularly worried, concerned about their health. So, I also provide medical, scientific knowledge in a reassuring manner.
Best wishes
Hi Kayls32
I hope the following highlights things a little more ........
A bone profile blood test analyses the proteins, minerals and enzymes present in your bones. These nutrients support healthy bone structure and development. A bone profile of blood tests helps to determine how well your body's metabolic processes are affecting your skeleton.
Thank you both. It’s all a bit confusing at the moment. I’m not sure how I can get a print out of results. I am in Scotland so no nhs app to view the results.
I do have a lot of b12 symptoms, numbness, tingling hand & feet, random nerve feeling pains on body. which is why I had the b12 active test done privately which was borderline low: my gp wouldn’t accept this test.
There is pernicious anaemia in my family, I had coeliac test done about 6 years ago which was negative so I tried gluten free and have been ever since.
Just ask thd receptionist to print out your results to take home Mine now ask for a form to be filled out for every request .
Quite ridiculous
Hi,
"Apparently my b12 is normal (359)"
Most of my serum B12 results were normal and I had severe B12 deficiency symptoms including dementia and spinal symptoms.
When you have time, look into "Functional B12 deficiency". This is where there is plenty of B12 in the blood but it's not getting to where it's needed in the cells so person develops deficiency symptoms.
MMA, homocysteine and Active B12 (holotranscobalamin) tests can help to diagnose Functional B12 deficiency.

Search online for this document "NICE CKS Anaemia - B12 and Folate deficiency" and read it thoroughly, including the Background Information. Try to get hold of B12 deficiency guidelines used by your ICB or Health Board and compare them to NICE CKS document.

Hi Kayls, b12 level above 200 are clinically normal. But based on your symptoms doctor might be wanting to check D3, B6, B9, B5, K2, Iron and Phosphoros levels to acertaiascertain whether your symptoms are due to some clinical reasons or need to look at a different line of treatment. Nothing to worry, reducing unknowns helps guide on reaching correct conclusions.
If possible ask doctor to recommend supplements like Acetyl L-Carnitine, creatine and coq10. Also start mild workout. This could alleviate your symptoms.
Deficiency of MagniciuMagnesium is at pendamic level now a days. So magnesium glycinate can help healing your nerves.
Vit D deficient is due to low sun exposure. So can take D 2000 to 4000iu daily along with K2-mk7 for 2 months. Once level crosses 50 you can fall back to D 600iu+K2 composition only.
