Good morning kind readers.Does anyone have any knowledge of the relationship of B12 in connection to migraines. My son age 60 yrs is having repeated and frequent migraines and his medics can’t make any clear diagnosis apart from stress. His B12 was ok at the last test. The migraines are severe and are preventing him working.I would be grateful for any input.Happy Christmas everyone.

migraines
All i can say was I'd never suffered from migraines until b12 deficiency. I did have a serum b12 test that was very low.
I saw 3 neurologists about the migraines and balance issues .
Told at least 26 different sorts .
Offered many drugs to try and control them.
For me regular b12 injections was the only thing to improve symptoms .
If your sons b12 is 'in range ' tell him to get a print off of his blood results .
Geg him to look up functional b12 deficiency if other symptoms 4x7st with no othef rrafin / cause given.
Get a referral to a neurologist
thank you Nackapan,My son is already under the care of a neurologist and although living in South America has excellent medical care. However I have wondered about lack of B12 could be a factor. His blood results are fine but I wondered if additional B12 would help in the treatment. The cause of migraines seems a mystery.I hope yours have disappeared. They are not pleasant and are very debilitating.A happy and healthy Christmas to you and your family.
The very best advice I can offer him is to consult a headache specialist doctor. In the UK you can self refer to the National Migraine Centre. B12 may be part of it but there’s a lot more to it than that!
Hello. Just thought I’d add that my migraines were solved with a daily Zinc tablet. Worth a try 😊
I have had migraines for most of my life. They tend to come in waves with periods of weeks or even months in between. My PA was not identified until 2022. The B12 injections I do 2x a day don’t seem to have improved my migraine rate. What did was 400 mg of magnesium a day. Dramatic improvement. I still get when dehydrated, stresses or when I’ve not had enough sleep. Interest now with a CGPT ( brand name in USA is Ubrelvy) and that cuts the attack to a few minutes which is amazing. But insurance here does not cover the drug and it is very expensive.
As to cause I have heard theories as to why I get migraines but I don’t think the medical community really knows.
hi there I am under the care of a young private gp here and he suggested I try b2 in a higher than usual dose for chronic migraines. He showed me on his computer screen that b2 is now recommended by Nice guidelines as a first line treatment before painkillers so I thought well I’ve nothing to lose, it’s not gonna harm me and since I started taking them I have had no more migraines,it was like something turned a switch off in my head, (I suffered migraines after a head injury ) I was so grateful for that bit of advice. Do your research re dosage of b2 for migraine prevention and you’ll see Nice recommend 400mg a day of b2 ( riboflavin ). Good website is the migraine trust have a read..best of luck and what a caring mum Merry Xmas
Thank you so much Thrones 12 for your reply. How very interesting and useful.I will tell my son in Chile. Its such an easy remedy…and the migraine trust website too..A very happy and above all a healthy new year.
I was told by my concussion neurologist to take 400mg b2 per day. I can say that it does help and b2 is really affordable. But years ago before I started b12 injections I was getting really bad headaches. Sometimes tight neck muscles or teeth grinding can cause headaches as well. My dystonia neurologist injects Botox in my neck and face/eye lids/jaw as it relaxes the muscles, which relieves the pain, but it also helps with migraines. Has your son been offered Botox as an option?
glad to share keep us updated if he tries it,it’ll be interesting ,I also take p5p which is the active form of vitamin b6 I use as a painkiller for neuropathy it’s the only thing that’s helped me have a google of p5p for more info..merry Xmas x
I suffered from migraine for 20 years and also had symptoms of low b12 and pernicious anemia. I tried diet, meditation, drugs with no relief. When I started b12 injections (hydroxocobalamin) the migraines stopped. It was a miracle for me. I have found that I need a higher dosage of b12 as I age. Weekly injections of 2.5mg or a daily oral dose of 2mg seems to work. Methylcobalamin gives me headaches and cyanocobalamin does not relieve symptoms. I think it's a matter of finding what works of each of us. If your son has no neurologic issues other than migraine then maybe the b12 is not related. I suggest researching food triggers and other possible causes of migraine and also supplements and treatment options. Our bodies are unique and send us messages, often difficult to decipher. Best of luck to you and your son.
I lived in Ecuador and my friends have a nurse come to the house once every two weeks and have a saline solution drip intravenously with positive results.
It is not targeting specific symptoms simply giving the body a base.
Of course you have to calculate any vitamins in the saline solution when supplementing other than that solution.
Thank you Wizard for your thoughts.
