An error I forgot about.

A few months back I used a multi use vial after not having used it for an unknown time.

I have sense come to understand that once the vial is open one should either use it up or throw it away. I use 90 days as my maximum length of time to use a vial once it is opened or mixed. I take tape and write the date I want to throw it away.

What happened is I developed redness, tenderness and minor swelling. I assumed it was a one off until I had 3 +- injection sites that were like this. I stopped using that vial.

I keep my vials wrapped in tin foil and check the needle for discoloration. I took the tinfoil off the vial and there were 'clots' in the bottom of the vial that disappeared when I shook the bottle. Same thing the next day.

I had planned on writing about this experience one it was over and the redness etc. resolved. Then forgot.

It took about three days to resolve. I do not know if it was that bacteria had grown or that the cobalamin had come out of solution so I was injecting a very high amount. I expect my 90 day maximum use has eliminated the problem.

Just pointing out this USA advice:

If a multi-dose has been opened or accessed (e.g., needle-punctured) the vial should be dated and discarded within 28 days unless the manufacturer specifies a different (shorter or longer) date for that opened vial.

Thank you for that!!. It is appreciated

I will change my use to 28 days after use. I at this time use 20 ml vials. With my current injection rate that will not be an issue.

Be cautious the last thing you want to do is inject bacteria into your body. I use the one off dosage vials that are disgarded after use - much easier ' if ' you can obtain them.

The last thing I want to do is continue to suffer from B12 deficiency. The bacterial risk is one I take.

Multi-use vials are much easier to use.

Bacterial risk is very much more acute than the chronic B12 issue. [IMHO].

Be safe.

You might be correct in your opinion. I would question if it was humble. : )

It is not applicable to the risks of infection from self injection. Note: The problem of using a multi use vial after not using it for a period of time is solved.

If your prepared to take the risk of infection what was the point of your post? Infection is a very high risk to take which could set you back.

Take care

I was not indicating that I would take the risk of using a multi-use vial after a time period of not using it. I now have the information shared that originated from the CDC and will act as I see fit.

I am comfortable with my knowledge and evaluation of the risks of self injection. General infection issues are not applicable to this specific problem which was easily solved.

Am I miss interpreting your post ?

You were using the same vial for 90 days.

Red inflammed lumps at the injection point.

Foreign objects seen in the vial ?

I think most of us would rather you stayed safe rather than you take risks.

Once again with the best intention I urge you to be careful.

Problem is solved.

I am a big boy. I know how to evaluate my risks. I also know I do not evaluate for anyone else.

I reread my post and it is a clear description of what I experienced. Perhaps read the post again?

I was only trying to advise to keep you safe - obviously in this case not appreciated.

Even big boys are at risk of infection ! ! !

Stay safe.

It is always wise to get the correct information 'before' you start self injections.

If your happy with taking such risks thats fine.

Have a nice day.

Unfortunately, I am not perfectly informed. Nor do I think anyone else is.

jillymo, I agree with your concern, I was also very alarmed, hearing someone taking such risks, if God forbid, a really bad infection was to acur and cause ill heath or worse,GP,s everywhere would be calling for a ban on si!

“ Just A Thought “. Big Boy or not. It has been my experience in life that Single Minded People will never comprehend the wisdom of seeking a second opinion. I’m sure Jillymo was only trying to assist you. It appears you intend to self medicate as you see fit. That of course is entirely your decision. I accept that you think you know what’s right. Also it’s your mind and your body, so do to it what you will. Finally, I have read before that you do your own research and experiments and this determines how you progress on your journey. I genuinely wish you well. Still not sure why you post in general if you already know all the answers.

I think in a clinic ituation the vial would be only used for one day. Does it not say on the box how long it's safe to use once opened. ?

Thank you for you reply it is appreciated.

CDC guidelines for a clinical situation.

If a multi-dose has been opened or accessed (e.g., needle-punctured) the vial should be dated and discarded within 28 days unless the manufacturer specifies a different (shorter or longer) date for that opened vial.

The issue is solved. Never was a major issue. I only posted to increase the knowledge base. Nice that helvella also added to my knowledge base.

The post took a unfortunate turn into comments about personal fears of injections as far as I can tell. I do not share those fears and use information to make my decisions about risks of injecting.

Ironically I have a degree in Safety Studies and use that education to evaluate risks.
