Depression and PA

HelloI started the PA journey in 2021, positive intrinsic factor and gastric parietal cell antibodies. I am hypothyroid. I thought my low mood would resolve after starting injections and at first it seemed to. I was taking B1 and B2, but stopped. I'm not sure that stopping the extra Bs has caused the v.low mood does anyone know? Or could you recommend something to help? I don't want to take prescription anti depressants. My mother took her own life, I'm sure she had undiagnosed PA, I just want to stop feeling this way.

Hello Aumshantii I am very sorry that you feel so down, its understandable given all the circumstances.

I find that being ill with a long term illness like P.A. can have a negative impact on ones state of mind at times. I wonder if its part of the illness too.

I can't take some supplements/medicines because of side effects, including B complex and anti-depressants.

I used to take St Johns Wort drops instead.

Im very sad for you about your mother. My family history has a similar background. Best wishes x

Thank you Wheat, it was a long time ago. I know depression can be a part of hypothyroidism. I was a child, I didn't understand why my mum was not like the other mothers. Now I feel I have turned into her and I fear my children think the same of me, that I'm lazy and useless because I can't get myself to do anything.it all seems so pointless. I had high hopes that B12 would be a magic cure once on injections after the battle to get them. I don't want to waste money on supplements if they don't help but may start them again to see if they make a difference.

As you know p,a. is for life and so is treatment. Unfortunately there is no magic cure , I think that contributed to my initial despondent feelings. However you will improve.

You need some supplements as co-factors of B12. I take D3, Folic Acid.

As for your other fears you don't need that 'burden', if you have not done so already, explain to your children you are ill etc.

Good Morning, I think depression and sadness is largely biochemistry and it is worth exploring supplements.

Firstly b1 and b2. Why not restart taking them again for at least a few weeks and see if they help get you back to where you were.

Other supplements I find helpful are vitamin D and k2, also magnesium threonate which helps my sleep quality - which is important for mental health.

There are other other supplements / nutrients which might help and you can research by Google give.

Take care and best wishes

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Yes, I think I will order some more supplements, rather them than anti depressants. I take D, and K2 and methylfolate which ran out today. I will order the Bs and look into magnesium. Best of health to you all.

Dear Aumshabtii,

How often are u receiving b12 injections? Perhaps a little increase in these might help?

I am no expert but was also diagnosed in December 2022 and have been on daily injections, have recently cut back to every other day injections. My low mood and depression has improved. I have also read that methylated supplements can sometimes cause anxiety in people. So I use folic acid instead of methylfolate. But like I said, I am no expert just offering you my thoughts.

Wishing you all the best.

Thank DiNL, I inject twice a week at the moment and have done for a long time.I understand that the B vitamins are finely balanced ,too much of one can throw the others out. It would be good to be able to check levels to see what's deficient but if the test exists, likely expensive. I have been taking methylfolate for months as I read its the best form of folic acid. It is very confusing with supplements to work out what you need and then which brand of supplement is worth the money. I wish there was a list of helpful supplements with a summary of what they help with.

Technoid's recent post about supplementation and B12 is really interesting:

Yes, it was very good. Only thing is, I think different people will likely have different needs even when they have the same condition, it's working out what you need, getting the right amount, the right brand and the overall balance right. I take many to support my thyroid, its so expensive, I got tired of it thought I'd see how got on without the B1 and B2. I have now reordered, I hope they will help. Its so hard when you are unwell to work it all out. With depression you can't figure out whether you are down because of events in your life or if its chemical imbalance that makes you less able to deal with events, like water down a plug hole there is only one way you can go. The cost of supplements is draining but if your health is kaput you don't enjoy much. This is a good place to both get your thoughts out and get advice. Thank you all.
