Hi all, thank you to all the regulars who provide such a wonderful information service. I have made some replies but mostly just follow. But last night I realised something and thought I would post.
Two recent topic threads have come together… one on oxalates and one on efficacy of ampoules as they get close to their expiry date.
I inject hydroxy EOD and was using an expiry deadline ofNov 23. I got a new supply early …having seen the thread …keen to know if new ampoules would buck me up a bit. I now have some dated Mar 26 and yes they do have a stronger effect than my older batch which are now in the bin. However along with the new batch came cystitis like symptoms and much disturbed sleep. Coincidence ???
Then the oxalate conversation popped into my head because …I did a FODMAP exercise a couple of years ago and worked out that high oxalate foods particularly greens were giving me urinary symptoms like cystitis keeping me awake at night.
After a while I thought I was becoming more tolerant of them as I improved my diet and took gut related supplements. However looking back I realised it coincided with me receiving a large batch of ampoules all expiry dated Nov 23 which I have been using until recently. Kept in the cool and dark I thought it would be fine.
I have now concluded
……that becoming more tolerant to my oxalate laden veg seemed to equal the decline in the efficacy of my B12 ampoules. Not scientific proof but a working hypothesis I can keep in mind.
……that I need to perhaps work harder at storing my ampoules in better conditions and buying less more often with longer periods to their expiry date.
…..stop eating so much high oxalate food and eat them earlier in the day again to manage the symptoms and get some more sleep.
Work in progress …

Yes we are all different, therefore need to work out our own salvation regarding pernicious anaemia . The medical profession is certainly still in the dark about it .
But it is always good to hear how others tackle P.A. . Thank you for your post and best wishes . .
Very interesting insights. I wondered what time of day you were taking the B-12? I read a post (but no longer recall where) that said it can interfere with your sleep if you take B-12 too late in the day. I saw a noted Urologist when younger who told me I could take the supplements I wanted to, provided I drank alot of water with them. So I believe hydration can play a key roll too.
I don’t think it is hydration. I have just upped my hydration unless it is the increased bathroom trips causing the cistitis like symptoms which is a thought However it is the cistitis that is disturbing my sleep more than anything.
I have experimented with injecting at different times of the day. If I am already drained then I often want to sleep several hours after injecting and plan for that to be overnight. Sometimes I will wake early but that is a bonus. If I am not too drained then I will inject in the morning, though may need a nap in the afternoon.
What high oxalate foods were you eating and in what quantities/preparation?
Although its possible for oxalates to cause issues you would have to be really overdoing it to run into issues (along with poor hydration and/or low calcium intake)
Although alternative health practitioners claim it to be possible, I cannot find any research indicating a possible link between oxalates and cystitis.
It was a range of raw fruit mostly that are high in oxalates in the daily diet but then eating cooked green elements of veg (with or without oxalate) is what seems to trigger the symptoms. Lettuce is ok. No one thing in excess. The only thing different was the new b12 ampoules.
Hydration I don’t think is an issue as I have just started upping my water intake by a litre a day. The only query is whether increased trips to the bathroom has irritated things and not the b12.
Calcium is something I need to think about …increasing dairy intake and combining it with the greens may help calm things down. Mmmm cheese.
I am sure you have heard this before about the research but … “absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.” Maybe no one has got around to doing it yet.
For me, for the same thing to happen in similar circumstances a couple of years apart makes me think there is a cause. I don’t normally have this issue.
I was just listening to an old (2014) In Good Shape dw video (via Bing called How to keep your kidneys healthy). Dr. Martin Kuhlmann mentions at the end that taking fruits and vegetables alkalizes the urine (So one is alkalizing their urine by taking more fruits and vegetables according to this doctor). He says this can be helpful for kidney stone prevention. As for cystitis prevention unfortunately he did not say.
