Anyone have hypercalcemia?

Hi, All! I've been doing pretty well since my diagnosis and b12 injections for 5 months or so. I still had some lingering symptoms that I felt were not related to pernicious anemia.

Anyway, the other day I ended up in the ER with kidney stones and hyponephrosis (urine backing up into kidney, swollen kidney). I am still waiting for my urologist appointment. I've been doing some reading in the meantime. I believe my stones are calcium because they're white. There's only a few types of stones and they are all different colors. The cause of calcium stones is hypercalcemia but the cause of hypercalcemia is different for different people.

I've been passing stones every hour 20 hours a day for 5 days. The pain has been nonstop. To make it just that much worse I have my period and a cold.....

I read all the basic stuff on causes like vitamin d, parathyroid disease, etc. But decided to look up b12 and calcium.

I didn't find a lot of info but I found a source that said b12 and calcium's absorption are mutually dependent. So if you are low in one you will have trouble absorbing the other. The article didn't go any deeper than that.

Wondering if anyone knows anything about the relationship between b12 and calcium or have had both pernicious anemia and hypercalcemia?

I'm wondering if b12 isn't being absorbed due to IF antibodies, could that prevent calcium absorption so there's too much free calcium in the blood and you get hypercalcemia? Now that I know about it, I've been having symptoms of hypercalcemia most of my life, along with pernicious anemia. I've been unwell my whole life.

Thanks!

I'm really sorry you're in so much pain. I hope you get some relief very soon. Xxxx

I'm not aware of any link between B12 & calcium. IFAB will not affect calcium, it's very specific to B12.

Hyperparathyroidism is the only cause of high calcium i'm familiar with parathyroid.com/ Do you have high serum calcium?

Vit D supplementation can cause hypercalcemia. Have you been taking Vit D tablets? Also, you can ask your doctor to run tests to confirm the exact reason for your kidney stones, although they don't always do it unless the kidney stones are recurrent (I had one case of kidney stones couple of years back, but they didn't run any tests. Luckily, there have been no further kidney stone episodes for me.)

I can't speak for B12 and hypercalcaemia, but things to consider are whether you take antacids, and maybe you need Vitamin K2 to get calcium out of blood into bones where it belongs. You also need to consider parathyroid, excess D, other hormone imbalances. Definitely more tests needed.

I'm not sure but I do have bone spurs on both of my heals after a time with not enough B12 and a bone spur on my head before being diagnosed PA when I was younger.

Sorry, missed your post. Take a look at this interview, it goes into detail on causes of kidney stones, types etc :

Thank u! I found out I didn't have stones I had unidentifiable sediment and hydronephrosis with no known cause. The excruciating pain lasted 4 weeks and is now gone. On top if it I had the flu at the same time and my iud is embedded in my uterus. Kidney function back to 100% normal.
