Missed period after b12 shots

Hi! I have been doing loading doses of b12- 2 a week for 5 weeks. I feel so much better! Only issue is now I have no period. I'm about 9-10 days late and not pregnant. Anyone experience this? Also I do not have PA, but something similar that I can't absorb B12 from my blood into my cells, making me deficient. Any info appreciated!! thanks! :)

Hi Jemarti1,

Good to hear that you are feeling better. It is good you know your root cause (unable to absorb).

First and foremost, you know your body best. You also know you are not pregnant. Our bodies when B12 deficient will cause a massive array of symptoms.

🤔 Our hormones and nervous system can be a bit out of synchronicity.

So, as females, our ovaries may delay releasing an egg/ovum, which travels down the fallopian tubes, the thickening of the lining womb and then the shedding of it and then the womb contracts. All result in a period.

It’s all super duper complex but the most important thing is you are on the mend.

Fun fact: there are 37 miles of nerves in the average human body. 🤓

Do you know how long this might last? We are trying to get pregnant so I would like my cycle to go back to normal 😅🥹

Hi ShrimpsNpickles1,

At the moment, I totally understand that both you and your partner want to have a baby. Please also be aware that you will need to be able to carry that baby to term. A healthy mum and a healthy babe. You don’t want to be physically ill by being so exhausted which will impact your emotional health which may or may not cause anxiety/depression/tearfulness/worrying thoughts.

The aim is the mummy who glows.

So, for you to have your B12, iron folate and/or whatever else need to be finally tuned for you personally. The demands on a woman’s body during pregnancy are grossly underestimated. Your vitamin B12 health journey is one aspect. When your periods do return, there may be months of disappointment when trying to conceive. This is nobody’s fault.

Now, you were diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency on whatever date. However, you showed signed and symptoms before. So, going from then. Plus, I do hope you are having adequate treatment including the co-factors like a multivitamin. Lots of changes occur to the cardiovascular system (medical speak for heart and blood system) in pregnancy. It’s normal that a woman needs more folate, iron and therefore, B12 whilst you are growing a little one inside.

Please note people do heal at different rates depending on age, severity of symptoms, length of deficiencies and other illnesses. It also really does depends on what you juggle in life and a person’s temperament. For example, the perfectionists who want things done yesterday are not helping themselves. This is because one part of the nervous system is known as the rest and digest (parasympathetic nervous system) and if a person is constantly in flight or fight mode, the wonderful relaxed side cannot work its magic; this is when repairing happens.

So, to answer your question of when, it really does on how proactive you are.

Sleep, diet, hydration, gentle exercise, a relaxed attitude, having supportive relationships, housing, finances, juggling work/studying plus caring demands all impact your health.

Vitamin B12 does play a massive role but is only one part of an extremely large equation.

(Unable to practice for years due to my own physical health). 🤰🏻

I would second all of this. Wait a while as it's very early days yet x

Hi Jemarti1,

Same here, searching for answers. After starting my B12 injections my period was late about 13 days and now that I got it, it only lasted 2 days and almost nothing 3rd day. It's annoying as didn't have this issue before and it correlated with B12 injections. So, in short, I got the period but 1-2 days only. Trying to figure this out. I'm having Cyanocobalamin as injections.
