B12 Shots & weight gain/swelling

I’m extremely frustrated and hoping to get some answers! I’m a very active 31 year old female with Hashimotos, fibromyalgia, colitis and an extreme B12 deficiency (pernicious anemia). I’ve been thin for years (6 years since the Hashimotos diagnosis and medication - thyroid levels are currently really good and all health problems in check besides the terrible B12 levels). I was recently diagnosed with an extreme B12 deficiency (low energy to the extreme, headaches, extra pain and swelling - more than normal, depression and horrible gut pain - bad anxiety about eating). I recently started shots (prescribed from the doctor - 1000mcg every week for a month and than every two weeks for six months and than once a month). I’ve taken two shots and I’m a week and a half in and I’ve gained ten pounds and I’m so swollen (it hurts to bend my legs). I went back to the doctor and was told that it was going to get worse before it got better (the weight and swelling, really bad nausea - too sick to function and bad heart pain). Has anyone else experienced really bad side effects or bad weight gain/swelling from B12 Shots? Any solutions? I can barely fit into my clothes, I’m so sick and it seems like everything is getting worse and I’m so hopeless (to be clear my B12 levels weren’t registering and than after my shots were only a 30 when normal is between 500 - 1500). Please help!

Is it the type you are having? May not suit you.

I was the opposite with loading doses I lost 10 lbs. Usually sores uo your metabolism I thought?

I have not heard of your symptoms from b12. I've had nausea and headaches. Aksi an exaggeration of problems caused by the deficiency

My daughter gets your symptoms from an autonomic problem which affects her digestion big time. Also sub clinical hypothyroidism tha5 is not being treated.

She has gained alot of weight. She is 29.

Have you seen a gastro specialist? Bp checked n test for PA ?

My daughter was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. It was wrong.

She has HEDS and POTs

Extremely low b12 was also found . I think root of the pots.

Low folate . Mak nourished at one point as like you got food phobic.

You need more investigations I think

You need the b12 .

Type of B12? Are there different types of injections? I was told injections were the only way as I was on supplements for years and my body won’t absorb them. I’ve taken thyroid medication for years and apparently my levels are all good right now. Also, I thought you weren’t supposed to take folate with b12 injections? I’m making another appointment this week so all the information I get is helpful as I can ask some different questions and hopefully start feeling better and not so unbelievably sick (would also be fantastic to fit into my clothing and not be in pain). Thank you 🙏

Yes there are different sorts of b12 that are used in injections . Hydroxocobalamin. Cynocobalamin and methyl.

B12 is treated first. If youd folate is low then toh can take 400mcg folic acid.

Get your heartrstd checked. Youd bo. As many bloods find ad possible.

Referrajz to specialists to start ring other things ouf.

Hope you get on okay at the doctors

You might be having a reaction to the form of B12 you are using during injections. Swelling indicates a possible side effect. Especially if it is immediate swelling.

As far as weight gain goes, I had the opposite.I lost a significant amount of weight, however, I also changed my diet so it's hard to tell why I lost the weight.

It looks like you had a severe allergic reaction to something - it might be B12 injections or might be a combination of medicines. As you have autoimmune, it means your body is in a state of chronic inflammation and your immune system is in overdrive - something sent your immune response over the roof.

It might be that you are allergic to that specific B12 injections. Ask to change for another form or another manufacturer.

However, with your auto conditions I would look at the problem wider. Your environment and lifestyle contribute to your conditions.

Not what you're looking for?
