I have written about my reaction to B12 subcutaneous . I’ve tried 3 types latest one Pasco before Hervert and Panpharma . I react very strongly bright red patch about 2 inches by 1 inch and v itchy. This irritates all day despite eumovate which initially helped on leg but no longer. I usually do them on tummy. It is stopping me sleeping and I am doing every other day so feel quite worn out. Do you think ok to take antihistamine before doing jab. I’m taking folic acid day of jab plus iron and Vit D as prescribed by Dr Klein. I will go back to him but wonder what others have done. The needle I use is 13 mm 30 g. Is that perhaps too shallow? I leave the are uncovered and wear loose clothing apart from that.
Thank you

13 mm is the longest suitable for SC so don't go for any longer ones.
Can you ask your doctor what brand/type of b12 they use, since you said you don't react to those. I would also ask what brand of needles they use. Perhaps it's a reaction to the needle, as suggested by the link above? Last option, perhaps try IM?
Thank you Jade I’m contacting Dr Klein as I’m not feeling great as I have been following his regime. I’m unable to ask my GP. They are against injections and cause endless problems. I’ll get in touch when I see what he says
I am so sorry to read about how B12 is affecting you. Itching and sleepless nights are awful.
I agree with Jade_S, in taking an antihistamine (most contain lactose).
I had a little root around if you don’t mind, you posted that you have a diagnosis of the umbrella term ‘irritable bowel syndrome’. Thinking out loud, you have :-
1) vitamin B12 deficiency,
2) iron deficiency.
3) vitamin D deficiency.
4) folic acid deficiency.
5) ??You were trying to increase your potassium ( from a previous post unless I have got confused which happens).
So, why have you all these ? Have you had a breath test for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth ?
Approximately 70% of the immune system is in the gut. If it’s out of whack (medical speak is gut dysbiosis) then histamine levels can increase making you reactive to all weird and wonderful things. It would include breaking the integrity of the skin. It’s medical jargon for saying even if a person puts a needle back in and out without anything injected, they would break out in a rash or have a reaction.
Hope that helps. Feel free to pop onto gluten free guerillas on here. Many of us have lots of intolerances, histamine problems and have very strange reactions to ‘stuff’. I ate 10 yoghurt raisins, I felt completely drunk, chest and nerve pain. Histamine popped, 20 minutes later, I felt so much better. Another food I said goodbye to.
Thank you for your email. I’m going to try antihistamine before jab. I have never had test for SIBO.I’m not sure where to go or ask. I don’t think my GP would do that but I’ll Google it. Very frustrating as I just want to get on . Injection into shoulder by nurse is fine. I’ll have a look at gluten guerillas. Thank you so much feeling a bit fed up with it all but not giving up.
Just a quick reply because I am tired bunny and I have a date with Bradley Walsh 🤣.
So, some GP’s can order but Healthplan cost £160.00 is just off the top of my head. Simple tricks such as putting apple cider vinegar or lime juice on food as we can also have low stomach acid. This means we can’t break down our food properly so we can’t get the nutrients from them.
But if we have too much bad bacteria in the gut then them little devils can be stealing our nutrients.
Yes, you are bound to feel fed up, drained, even tearful down. The gut and brain are very connected.
smg1950 Try pushing on plunger very slowly & count 5 secs before removing the needle. Could you be pushing the b12 liquid to quickly into your stomach using 30 gauge ?
I use 25g 5/8" .. I inj slowly, but as my gauge is bigger (larger hole in needle) more gets through. I inj subq in my thighs as well, w/o issues.. same size needle & gauge as used for my stomach.
It sounds like an allergic reaction to something, maybe a filler, in the shot. I used 1000 mcg sublingual B12 for many years and it worked for me (until it didn't). Some people do OK on that. If it worked for you, then you would not need the shots.
I suggest you take a deep breath and revert to IM injections. I have three injectable medications that I take on regular basis. Two of them cause redness and irritation when done subQ, but not IM. I use a 25g 1 inch needle in the deltoid muscle in my arms and a 22g 1.5 inch in the ventro gluteal area. I am very used to them so they do not bother me much, certainly much less than the painful red bumps on my stomach when doing subQ.
