B12 loading doses and stomach pain; also 10mg melatonin OK to take on loading doses?

Hello,

My daughter's had her first of 6 EOD loading doses, next one tomorrow. First was last Friday.

My current line of thinking is that she has inherited a degree of autism from her dad, but also has b12 d, possibly PA (neg IFAB).

She's complained since the first dose of stomach pain (gluten free and lactose free diet), sometimes spreading upwards into esophagus area. Off and on.

I think she has low stomach acid but we don't know for sure.

It might not be b12 related, but I'm interested to hear of experiences with loading doses or high oral doses where people had stomach issues which later resolved?

Also-

She struggles to fall asleep (possible autism, on waiting list, racing mind) and has used Natrol melatonin 10mg slow release in the past. (I'm pretty sure she used more than one though, which bothers me). She's 19.

She was still awake at 5am this morning and asked about melatonin.

I'm wondering if 10mg is OK alongside the loading doses? If anyone knows, has experience?

Anyone have any experience of B12/other nutrients/ neurodevelopmental sleep-related issues?

Her folate is 45 8.83-60.8

Ferritin 58 13-150

Vit D 150

Iron panel picture included

Not hypothyroid as far as we know, no antibodies - that's next thing to be investigated.

I know everyone can only give their experience, not advice.

Thank you!

Replying to bump this up :) i think i already commented on iron in another post.

I am not aware of melatonin interacting with b12. Others may know more.

I found my sleep schedule got better after addressing everything, b12/folate, thyroid, iron etc etc.

I'm sorry about her stomach problems. Hope it gets better soon xx

Thanks for your reply and the bump😀

Yes I think it's going to take getting all those things optimal before her sleep can normalise.

Thank you -we're hoping her stomach pain is a b12 injection blip...got to wait and see. xx

Oh one thing i always forget about is potassium. You may try upping food sources. If the body is busy replacing red blood cells, potassium can dip and that can cause weird side effects. Bananas, avocado, coconut water, if she can tolerate any of those. You can also google it, there are other sources. Last resort, a tiny bit of lo-salt, or any other salt replacer with potassium chloride - small amounts, don't overdo it because excess potassium is no good either.

Thanks for this, that's good - I'll watch out and look at food lists.I've been reading about potassium dropping and wondering at what point do you not worry about it anymore?

Out of interest, is that only relevant for injections, or high dose oral as well?

It takes about 3-4 months to renew all the RBCs so i'd say probably maximum about that long.

If deficient and you're properly absorbing tablets, the same thing could also be an issue. But tablets don't raise levels as much as injections, so perhaps the effect is less pronounced? I'm just guessing here!

Yes I get it, very difficult to know all the different influences! But that's helpful to know about the RBC turnaround time.👍🙂

Have her stomach issues settled yet? 🙏

Oh no I've only just seen this sorry ! Fingers crossed they seem to have settled for now anyway...she did have a couple more stabs of pain which we haven't been able to pin to anything... jeez you get obsessed don't you with tracking every little twinge😃 Thank you for asking.

A little off topic of b12 but have her try one nostril breathing for sleeping.

You close one nostril and breathe through the other one - in & out slowly ten times. Apparently it balances the brain for sleep.

Note: You do not switch nostrils. This is not like yogic breathing. Pick a nostril and do not change to the other side.

All the best to you both.

I like the sound of this! I'll tell her to try it, thank you🙂.I'm not sure about the shots- probably hydroxocobalamin as NHS standard?

Wonderful, was simply double checking that it was not methylcobalamin. Some people do wonderful on it, but for some of us it has quite a few interesting aspects - one being feeling completely wired.

This is very interesting to hear - what kind of reactions besides wired are you talking about? It's odd, isn't it, since as far as I understand, all b12 ends up as methyl- or is that completely wrong?!😀

I'm still on my very steep learning curve.

😊

I know it is strange, eh?

I have taken all three forms and feel different on all three.

Some feel no difference at all.

With methylcobalamin I find it hard to sleep, and feel completely agitated. I am not alone on here with methylcobalamin, there are a few of us. I am so sensitive to methylcobalamin that even with sprays or pills - where it is advertised as another form I know when to turn over the bottle and see that it has some methylcobalamin as well. Has happened twice to me.

I can also tell when my sister is taking methylcobalamin. She used to go on and off it & I could tell - she is pretty zen and I could hear impatience and agitation when she was on it.

Blimey so it seems to have quite a 'psychoactive' response for some people then. Or stimulatory in any case, perhaps a bit like the adaptogens, such as ginseng, are for certain people.

Green tea does it to me, quite a yucky 'zing bing' hyper thing!

Thanks for the heads up for future encounters😀
