Arms aching above elbow

Has anyone experienced this? The top section of my arm muscles aches, sometimes almost painfully, coming and going. Not every day.

Sometimes it feels like the muscles are relaxing a bit. They are generally pretty tight.

It's both arms, always together. From top of arm to just above the elbow, on the outer part of the arm.

I've had it a lot lately (it goes back years though), it's not linked to any use of arms or exercise. I have a cfs diagnosis for what that's worth (not a lot in my opinion!).

Just wondered if any b12 or folate connection that anyone knows of.

Probably too vague to pin down, but I thought I'd ask.🙂

As you say, it's a bit vague as a symptom, but not inconcievable that it could be related to B12D. But could also be thyroid or any other number of things... I assume docs have checked it out?

Do you take any magnesium?

Hi Jade, I'm sureI posted a reply to you about magnesium...or maybe that was someone else. Brain curdle. I take glycinate 200mg elemental but can't work out the dosage - capsules. so it may be 100mg or 400mg....

Here is the label, maybe you could interpret?!

Oh my goodness I replied about magnesium to you below, I'm clearly too addled to be on the forum today (but it probably won't stop me). Sorry the picture is so teensy, overzealous snipping or something.

If you take 2 you get 140 mg :) The "elemental" one is the part to look at.

Ah so there's room for increase maybe? What is the general suggestion for dose? Thanks for working it out for me🤯😃

You're welcome! I have no idea about dose, i'm terrible with magnesium though i need it & take some when i remember. I'm thinking maybe 200-300 mg??

If you find out from the TUK forum let us know 😂

Tight muscles is one of the symptoms of PA I have had since diagnosis. I don’t know why that is. It is better after 5 years of injections but still not back to normal

I have tight muscles that squeeze and are painful at times but also I have that in other parts of my body as well and my toes as of late - it started in the arms though.

Littlelodge123 and Mixteca,

Have you both connected this with B12D/PA?

It's good that yours has improved with injections Littlelodge123.

Just curious, I've had it for years but has been worse lately. Yes could be thyroid of course.

jade_s I don't think I have mentioned it specifically to gp it must have got lost in the symptom soup.😅

I take magnesium glycinate 200mcg elemental, at least I think I do. I can't work out what a single dose means, on the bottle. One capsule, 2 capsules, 1 dose, 2 doses🤔 (gives up, as this involves Thought).

I didn’t have it before so it’s either a coincidence or it’s PA and I’m inclined towards PA

I think the connection is definitely there and I believe mine is also related to iron deficiency - it's too low for my B12 to be doing its job well. These symptoms got much worse the last three months and before that it wasn't an issue.

So if I understand right, over the last three months you've developed or uncovered an iron deficiency, and that is stopping the b12 working, hence your aches/tight muscles?

I'm find I'm often trying to make connections between the nutrients and the effects on symptoms (and failing) so this is helpful, thank you.

I wouldn't put it quite like that. My iron deficiency dates back years but it wasn't an issue and I didn't realise the significance of it until I got really ill 3 months ago, 3 months into B12 treatment. Desperation forced me to see an iron and PA specialist who concluded that was the cause. The body needs good iron stores for B12 treatment to work.

Ah, so you already had the iron deficiency but it didn't become an issue until a certain way through the b12 treatment- at the 3 months point. And the specialist concluded your low iron was causing (indirectly) the muscle pain?

Sorry if I'm being slow! I'm trying to build a map in my head of nutrient interrelations so as my daughter continues with b12 injections (first one yesterday) I can be aware of possible reasons for new symptoms.

I also have muscle aches (lord above I should know I started this post😂) and am hopefully going to start b12 injections too.

In my daughter's case she has low transferrin saturation and ok iron/ferritin and I seem to be high transferrin saturation and high-ish iron without supplementing at all. No snp for haemochromatosis. We plough on.

How are you now with your iron and symptoms?

Thanks for bearing with my ramble😀

Hi Sneedle, ramble away it's what I do. It's a lot to take on and understand and we're all learning, no need to apologise. That's essentially yes, I think.

My ferritin's on the low side and my transferrin saturation is 18%, which is a significant iron deficiency, according to the specialist. I'm actually much worse than I've ever been right now so this is a difficult time for me.

Muscle weakness is common with B12 deficiency. I can no longer carry heavy objects or do heavy gardening work. I tore my left rotator cuff last year and even a year later still need a sling.
