SC in Australia

Hi everyone,I've got a packet of B12 (I'm in Australia and it's the Neo brand) and I'm thinking of injecting it SC. The problem is it says 'for IM use only'.

It's hydroxocobalamin chloride 1mg in 1mL and the other ingredients are sodium chloride, water and acetic acid.

Does anyone know if this sort of product can be injected SC?

Many thanks

hello greenscarf, I ve had the neo brand IM. But also S.C. . Plus other brands (hydro. too) that state can be IM or SC. Hope this helps, but if you are unsure you could contact manufacturer. Best wishes.

It's possible they just have not applied for a license to use as SC. The German ones all say SC & IM, and (if i remember correctly) one of the exact same brands used in the UK on prescription says IM only.

You might also change the title of your post to include Australia, in case that helps draw them to your post. I'm pretty sure there are Australians on this forum who SC.

I’m sure that it’s fine to inject sub-cutaneously with Neo B12 hydroxocobalamin. Australia , New Zealand and U.K. all administer B12 by I.M. method . But on the continent , both I.M. and sub-cutaneous methods are used . Also because self-injecting is frowned upon by doctors , they probably think that would be self-injectors will be intimidated by the longer needle for I.M . …

I think that I.M . has its place for the initial injections (6 in 2 weeks,) The B12 injected into the muscles, gets into the blood quickly . as muscles have a good blood supply .

Sub-cut injections into the fat layer take longer to reach the blood because of more minor supply of blood vessels — But ideal for maintenance .

Hi greenscarf, I thought it would be safe. So glad everyone has verified that.

Yes it's perfectly safe, if your slightly unsure you can watch videos on YouTube about SC injections and possibly put your mind at rest but it's all good 👍

Yes SC is generally ok, except we have to be careful because this is a different form of hydroxo (chloride) and the leaflet warns very strongly that it cannot be done intravenously, whereas the german ones are the acetate form and that's fine for IV as well as IM, SC. So i was being careful for this reason. :)

Quite rightly so it's best to check first 👍
