Hi, I got call today from nurse after getting bloods done to ask if I have been take b12 oral supplements because my b12 is over 2000 doesn’t know exactly how high because they don’t read any higher than that. I explained I have been injecting b12 when I feel I need it & makes feel so much better. I was experience weird sensation in legs at night, always tired for years & fog brain. All improve with b12. Is my levels dangerous or is this normal when self injecting?

Yes that’s absolutely normal when you are self-injecting , and nothing to worry about . My B12 results have been off the scale since I started self-injecting 9 years ago . Other members on this forum will also re-assure you on this as well

I’m so glad to hear that your symptoms have been improving ! So the message is ——keep on self-injecting ! YOU CANNOT OVER INJECT - Best wishes !

Like others say on here, she was telling me no need for it amongst other things & the more I take the more my body will crave it. If I try and reduce it my body will cave & symptoms will appear but to bear with it they will subside. The nurse said my liver & kidney function are fine, she seamed to be concerned about their function because b12 so high.

We have all come to realise that the medical profession is sadly lacking in knowledge where vitamin B12 is concerned . If you were not supplementing ,then a high reading of B12 would be of concern (.kidney or liver problems ) Do keep on supplementing to stay well . We all are different and need different regularity of supplementation. Anything from every day and so on . You find out by trial and error . You cannot overdose on b12 , so do not worry . It is possible to overdose on other vitamins . Best wishes .

I challenged her with SIGN guidelines and through her off course. Hope it was enough for her to do some reflection on her practice & read them.

Her answer was about guidelines in this area & I challenged her by asking why they were different to SIGN guidelines. Her reply was SIGN guidelines are probably not updated to reflect theirs 😂

Why was B12 done?

Heavy bleeding nearly every week, couldn’t string a sentence together. Felt severe anxiety & depression, was off work for 3.5 months. wanting to lock myself in room not wanting to see or speak to anyone, just to be left to sleep. Total mental & physical break down and put on an antidepressant for they months. Not pins & needles in feet and legs but weird feeling in them at night.

One thing the nurse did say was keep in mind you were peri menopause at the time. This was true & given HRT. However I still feel some of the symptoms at times & then I inject & feel it does help.

Brain fog was right off Richter scale with me at that time.

I self inject for exactly the same reasons, plus years of depression and the associated negativity that has affected me constantly. I was staggered that with a couple of injections it all faded away to reveal the me that I had only ever had a glimpse of before.

My pretreatment levels were 256 & 412. After a year of injections - loading doses, weekly then monthly, my level was 5700.

That also raised eyebrows but I shall decline further testing if I possibly can.

Hi Ebonner, Yes, max'd out B12 values on blood test is normal when supplementing through injections. Mine have been max'd at 2,000 since I started 3 years ago. As Wedgwood stated "you cannot over inject" that's because B12 is a water-soluble vitamin and your body readily get's rid of any excess in your urine. Unlike iron and other substances that are not water-soluble where there is no physiological mechanism for excretion of excess iron from the body.

The other important thing to note is the only stores of B12 that are available to your body are that in your blood. In a person without PA/AMAG, hmmm I'll call these people "Normal" : ) B12 is stored in the Liver, typically enough to last 3 years, and your body recycles this B12 continuously. However, the mechanism for recycling from the Liver is through the Bile duct into your small intestine where the B12 has to bind with Intrinsic Factor in order to be absorbed, again, in the terminal ileum. So we all know this ain't work'n! Hence Liver stores of B12 are of no use to you. My doctors told me for the longest time that once we build up my liver stores then I would be good for several years. Well that I am pretty sure is Kapoooey.

If you've been diagnosed with B12 deficiency and PA then you've reached an advanced state of this condition and you've already used up your Liver stores of B12.

Hope this is helpful, Rexz

I was never diagnosed with it however I can remember before injecting reading my b12 blood results & comparing on here. At that time they were definitely at border line. Any way I believe what ever my level was it wasn’t sufficient for my body to function, we’re all different. I’m scared to stop them & nurse said I will experience symptoms but they will ease given time.

I was taking oral B12 with no improvement of symptoms. My level was around 2000 also. My GP prescribed injections in spite of the high level. I feel much better and GP is not concerned with the high numbers. He hasn't retested since the injections started. No reason to, it will be off the charts. My PA (megaloblastic) comes with or from an absorption issue I suppose.

If you are deficient, the ideal B12 number is a level that "prevents" symptoms from returning. B12 over 2000 is fine if that is what it takes to keep symptoms at bay. Remember Lab ranges are for people "not" on treatment
