I'm interested in your MCV number. Just had new bloods done and my MCV still slighter higher than it should but better than it was over a year ago before injections began. This only very slow improvement may be why I feel I'm only recovering slowly also. My understanding is that an increased MCV(mean corpuscular volume) means that the red blood cells are still too big and therefore inefficient.

Scientist, not medic. You say your MCV is high. How high? Bigger red cells will still work very efficiently, and should eventually return to 'normal' if you've had a treated deficiency.

Just as an aside, horses and donkeys have rather smaller red cells than humans. Likewise elephants and mice, from my recollections. Goats have tiny red cells, typically around 30-40 femtolitres and they manage!

Well that's good then, but I haven't been managing with all the symptoms x

Thank you I never knew that, it's good to know x

That's about as normal an FBC as I've seen in a long time. Firstly, you're not anaemic, as your Haemoglobin is well into the reference range. Your MCV according to whoever processed it is borderline low, but your MCHC is slightly raised. These are so close to normal I wouldn't worry, but to keep your mind at ease, get this repeated sometime [no urgency at all] because the analysers we use are very precise, and if the results have changed from last time then that might be an indicator of something, but to be honest I'd doubt it.

Don't worry. It's not an FBC that would suggest B12 deficiency, but that's not always indicated in the FBC anyway.

As a reference for you, here are my results from when my GP told me I had Pernicious Anemia with a B12 level of 104, (if I remember correctly), Folate deficiency and Macrocytic Anemia.

That'd do it! Makes perfect sense to me.

I meant to add, it's yet another one where we see macrocytosis but a normal Haemoglobin, so whilst not actually anaemic, it doesn't stop it being PA!

Thanks my friend, I'll compare. I'm really learning about it x

Where your results are outside normal ranges its only a very small difference so very likely not significant. Its worth repeating those tests after a few months.

Hi,

Have you got recent results for serum B12, folate , ferritin and other iron tests?

It can be harder to interpret a FBC (Full Blood Count) if a person has a mix of B12 deficiency , folate deficiency and iron deficiency.

Hi that's brilliant info thank you. Sleep bunny, sorry took me a while to reply. Really appreciate your time taken writing your message. Apparently I had low reading last year in January but they didn't retest me this time. All my symptoms have improved since I started high strength Vitb12. Still not right though x

If you want to know if you have a b12 deficiency, you should take a test for B12. Make sure you have not taken any B12 supplements recently.
