I’ve been poorly with a blood clot in my lung which after 4 doctors 1 paramedic 2 hospital visits they found on a chest X-ray. I had a bad chest infection too which was mimicking the clot.
I’ve been on a course of blood thinners and feel completely wiped out.
I had my 4 weekly B12 for my pernicious anaemia last night and was told you shouldn’t really have it when you’ve been in blood thinners. Thankfully it was nice nurse and she just did it.
Advice please. Is this right and do I need to self inject now to get better. Doctors and nurses at hospital fantastic but run off their feet and didn’t provide answers. Keep well all. X

It is more than disconcerting to be told such nonsense about Vitamin B12 and blood thinners , by health professionals. My GP told me that more than a 3monthly injection of B12 was toxic !
it’s scary Wedgwood that we have to place our health in certain so called medical professionals when actually we know more than them. I wish you well. X
thank you again. Luckily I got the lovely nurse who just books me in for my jab every 25/28 days. Hope she never leaves. Thank you for your kindness so much appreciated when you have your own uphill struggle to cope with
There seems to be a risk with IM injections in general while on blood thinners:
Due to their increased bleeding tendency, people taking oral anticoagulant medicines may be at increased risk of bleeding complications related to IM injections such as bruising or haematomas (collection of blood that has leaked from blood vessels into tissues, organs or other body spaces).
I hope you’re feeling better now and get as well as possible very soon.
I had the self same problem in 2021 and found myself at Betty’s once again (QEUH). At no time did anyone suggest that I should refrain from B12 jabs and I’m now on Apixiban for life. If the cause of your clot isn’t 100% apparent then I reckon you will be on blood thinners as infinitum too.
Since then, the only thing I can no longer ingest is the NSAID I was on Etericoxib which is a great loss to me but apparently blood thinners and NSAIDS combined can cause stomach bleeds. I couldn’t do without B12 as I have PA.
afternoon Twaddletop. Thank you for your information. I’m so pleased you survived your blood clot too it’s such a scary time. They said my blood clot was because of COPD and infections and only gave me injections of blood thinners into my tummy then 5 days orally. I have to attend the nurse every week for blood tests and at the moment they say my blood is still showing inflammation. I like you have PA and was scared they were going to stop my B12. I wish you well. X
Hi Hedgehogs. I regularly take blood thinners and do IM twice weekly B12 injections. I have PA and congenital heart conditions requiring a NOAC. I do my own IM first thing in the morning before I take my blood thinner. I haven’t had any bleeding or bruising problems so far. I do press the site with a clean pad after IM and am OK. Hope this is some reassurance. I’ve been doing this for a year now , prior to that I’d been getting IM from GP once every 2 months. I still get my IM every 2 months with GP and top up. I need both drugs as I have atrial flutter alongside other heart stuff. Hope you’re recovery goes well and all the best
afternoon Sea-Blue. It really is very kind of you to take time to reply to me when you have so much going on with your own health. I have taken your advice on board which I find very reassuring. I wish you all the very best for the future. Thank you x
You’re very welcome Hedgehogs, I know how worrying it can be when you have to take more than one drug and you have more than one medical condition. We have to stick together and help each other. Theses forums are great places for support and sometimes we all need a bit of reassurance
