It is an acknowledged symptom of B12 deficiency . When totally untreated for a long time , it can lead to double incontinence.

Incontinence is absolutely related. I've noticed this when cutting back on B12 treatment. Cannot run without an accident. Had no idea this was related to B12 until researching the subject.

If only the medical professionals would research B12 deficiency/ Pernicious Anaemia . So much misery is caused by the ignorance .

Hi... Before I was diagnosed with b12 deficiency I had problems with urinary inconsistency, they were so severe that I went twice to A&E, they run several tests for bladder infection etc just to be told that everything if fine... then I went to see urologist and did so many tests just to find out that I have 'sensitive bladder' then I developed other weird symptoms like numb face etc... so I was constantly searching the Internet and found this forum, ran B12 test next Intrinsic Factor tests to find out the culprit... after first few injections urine inconsistency got even worse but now two years after initial injection all seems to be Ok but some neurological symptoms are still present (injecting every 8 weeks)

Have you thought about more regular injections? As we know that there is no danger of overdosing on B12 , it’s worth thinking about . You have remaining neurological symptoms , so everyother day injections until no improvement until no improvement is recommended .

And yes , so often symptoms do get worse when one first starts injecting .

Before starting b12 treatment there were times I had no choice but urinate on the floor. The urge to spend a penny was so sudden and I were so disorentated I stood no chance of getting myself to the bathroom.

At least you have a dog you can blame the puddle on.

I had the same thing. It was so distressing. I had no control or warning whatever. It gradually got better with B12. But I still have a problem with urgent urination. I have to manage my liquid intake when out. For example we went to see Cabaret and you aren't allowed to go to the loo during a performance (if you go you won't be allowed back to see the show until the interval). So I couldn't have a glass of wine before the show. And when I go on walks I have to pee behind bushes all the time.

Thankfully I am not an open air urinator as now housebound but I do know what you mean about the urgency. When I were very poorly I found a new use for my window vac. 🤣

This was another thing I noticed I was unable to pee straight and would often pee over the side of the loo. It really was very strange.

Good job we can talk about these things but Shhhhh dont tell anybody. 🤫

I often have to make a mad dash to the loo... and hope my partner hasnt left the seat up!

Jillymo profile image

Thankfully I dont have that issue. I have in a mad dash peed on the loo seat because I hadn't lifted it so now I leave the lid permanetly up. That side of things has improved with the injections.

I take pumpkin seed oil which also seems to help. Some men take it for their prostate. I wonder if men have the same urgency with their B12 deficeincy ?

One of the most upsetting symptoms I was experiencing was urinary incontinence. I couldn’t go out without pads. My abdomen was swollen and painful. I was referred for a bladder scan. All normal. Months After this I requested a B12 test and it came back with a significant deficiency . I was started on EOD and eventually my incontinence stopped. Now I receive 8 weekly NHS injections but SI in between myself.

Yes I do the same. But still feel bloated

Yes urine incontinece is my main symptom. It gets worse just after my injection for a day then clears up until injection is dues 4 days later. Was diagnosed as having irritable bladder but that was a waste of NHS money all the tests. I think low B12 might be the cause of a lot of post pregnanacy incontinece due to the gas and air depleting B12.

How do u mean gas and air. Can b12 cause this. It drives me mad somtimes

Hectorsmum2 profile image
Hectorsmum2 in reply toMozza127

I think I have this right, gas and air removes B12 from your body leaving you depleted of it.

wedgewood profile image

Yes , it depletes B12 . It’s called nitrous oxide or laughing gas . Sone kids use it in Balloons at festivals Really dangerous for them . It can be purchased on line . The catering industry uses it to propel canisters of whipped cream !

Yes I have my injections every 3 weeks I do it twice and one of docter every 8th week. But I've noticed my bladder is not as strong and feels sum times like heavy feeling if anyone gets that and also my wind is different as in bloated don't fart like I used to suffer bloating as result from build up of wind

Jillymo profile image
Jillymo in reply toMozza127

B12 can alter both bowel and bladder but hopefully with frequent injections it will improve. I suffered the most horendous bloating to the extent I looked nine months pregnant. It was so damned uncomfortable because it made it hard for me to bend. Since injecting this is also much better plus I follow a gluten free diet. It's a blessing that we can talk to one another on here.

I do hope things improve for you soon. 💐

I've had the dribbles for about 38 years. 😂 Starting when I was 23 years old. I thought it was from an injury and some surgeries. I have adhesions and I've had a lot of interstitial cystitis issues. It would get really bad when I would take prednisone to help with other issues. My bladder would leak so bad I couldn't leave the house. It just trickled out non-stop. The B12 has helped a lot but it is one of my worst problems. It's very irritating. Keeping oneself manicured down there really helps with oder and cleanliness. Plus wearing a pad is a must. But this is not your normal bladder leakage from old age or menopause. This is way more than that. My bowels have the opposite problem. I have a leaky bladder but my bowels just don't seem to want to work right. Such is life now. So that I don't have to walk all the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, and risk losing my balance in the dark, I keep a bedside commode in my room. It's very convenient for when you have to pee five times a night or every 15 minutes. Or when the neuropathy in my feet hurts so bad I don't want to walk all the way to the bathroom. I inject everyday for 10 months now, I think this is as good as it's going to get for me.

I'm wearing incontinence pants as I type, after yet another 'accident' first thing this morning...It comes and goes, some days I can hold it fine, others by the time I've thought "I need to wee" it's running down my leg...

Sorry for the "over share" but I'm fed up of being discreet/delicate about these things!! 😂😂

These are the pants I've got

amazon.co.uk/Amazon-Basic-C...

very cheap, very good pants, you can order them on subscription to get new ones every however often you need. I bought one box of 28 just to see what they're like, and they are much the same as the brand name version. They come in a discreet box!

Yes, I do. I've lost count of the times at this stage.

Yep, same here! Many years now, put some of it down to a very large baby and difficult birth, but did post pelvic floor exercises and all seemed well for years. Then came back, finally diagnosed Coeliac and then PA. On 8 weekly regime, but find that when jab is due the incontinence is worse, as is tiredness, sore and bleeding mouth, neuropathy etc., If only the medical profession had a good grounding in PA and realised the wide ranging effects of this simple but life essential vitamin. Would also save the NHS millions if we were all treated on an individual basis receiving our B12 according to our needs.

Mozza127, I have trouble with urge frequency, emptying fully, and just generally not being able to hold liquid. I went to PT for the urge frequency probably a good 6 years before I was diagnosed with pernicious anemia.

Hope you're getting some good feedback here, looks like it!
