Monofer is making me feel crap

Hi,

I had an iron infusion 10 days ago as I had Feratin at 10 and low iron transfusions. I am sure in long run it will help me but Monofer is making my life bit of hell. Not slept one night in the past 10 days without waking up in the middle of the night. My sleep quality has been crap.

(a) has anyone had monofer and how long did any of these side effects last?

(b) when does monofer kick in, will I wake up one day and feel great? I am on day 11 how long before I feel less tired and mentally better?

Any tips from anyone who had monofer. Please advise as I am struggling with poor quality of sleep and irritability.

Hi

Sorry I have no experience on this matter and I am sure you will get a reply soon now Christmas is over. Hang in there.

Hi, sorry you’re feeling unwell.

I don’t know if you’re aware that pernicious anaemia and iron anaemia are different things?

Many of us have both including myself. It usually takes a while to feel well again after an iron infusion. You should gradually start to feel better after a couple of weeks but it will take a couple of months for the iron/ferritin replacement to complete its job .

I can’t really comment on the lack of sleep as sadly it’s very rarely that I’m able to sleep through the night without waking at least once anyway. If you slept well before this then you should soon settle down into a good sleep pattern once again.

Have been taking Monofer for low iron for a couple of years. No notable side effects except for black stools. Pharmacist said to take after meals unlike previous iron tablets prescribed which were to be taken on an empty stomach, so I take in the morning after breakfast. Not sure when you take yours, timing could have something to do with what you're experiencing?

Hi Abhishek, I am sorry you are having troubles there. I do recognise the concern you have. I hope it resolves and improves in time. Though I am not good at patience myself. On another tilt... I literally dream of just waking up once a night. I tend to fully wake up, get up, three or four times a night with the pains / burning. And going the loo...but that's more aging bladder I suspect..
