Cynocobalamin works well but you will need to inject more often . That’s why the NHS changed from Cynocobalamin to Hydroxocobalamin. ,several years ago . Hydroxocobalamin apparently stays in the system longer than Cynocobalamin.
hydroxo is generally used in the UK. Not entirely clear why though may have something to do with the risks associated with patients who have lebers syndrome using cyanocobalamin. Lebers is a rare genetic condition, mainly affecting males and it seems to be inherited but its possible that people may not be aware of the condition.
I hope that the doctors in the USA know this , because Cynocobalamin is the B12 that is commonly used there ! Was this known when Cynocobalamin was the form used here in the U.K. I wonder . I read that we here in U.K. changed to Hydroxocobalamin because it could be injected less frequently , but perhaps it was because of the risk of Lebers. . … or perhaps both 🤔.
The doctors here in the US know little to nothing about B12, let alone the various forms. Our biggest medical system in the state doesn’t even have a medical code for hydroxycobalamin so my medical record says I use cyanocobalamin even though I have repeatedly asked for that to be corrected as I had an anaphylactic reaction to cyano years ago. Sigh…
when hydroxocobalamin was first introduced in the UK it was 1 per month - only later that it was made less frequently.
The CDC had a microsite on B12 at one point but it's now gone - lebers is mentioned as a counter indication for B12 but in the US its unfortunately seen as a blanket counter indicator for B12 rather than a counter indicator for cyanocobalamin specifically
Goodness ! I always think of the U.S. as being at the forefront of medical knowledge . BUT , b12 isn’t a money -spinner I suppose! It’s all so depressing .
