I would like the community’s input on what to take when I’ve eaten something that has resulted in stomach ache please.I’m now taking the recommended Zinc and Betaine HCI early days on those I’m hopeful they will help .Trial and error food wise I’m keeping a record of what has an adverse affect !

If you think its gastritis related, meaning that it has irritated your stomach lining you have 3 options. You can take the conventional route of over the counter meds or herbal supplements or both.

Over the counter meds to help include ppi and h2 blockers. Both help with reducing the acid in your stomach to allow the lining time to heal. I tend to use the latter because they are less potent in suppressing our acid which our body needs to digest and absorb food.

Two herbal supplements that are beyond amazing to help with gastritis are slippery elm powder and marshmallow root powder. They work by coating the lining of your stomach and this protects it from the acid which in turn helps with healing.

Its important to note, both over the counter meds and herbal supplements reduce the effects of meds and have to be kept apart. PPI/h2 blockers arent recommended for long term use. At my worst flare up I was on them for about 5 weeks. My thyroid levels were effected but I needed to heal my stomach so it was worth it.

Whenever I have a flare up of my symptoms my protocol is:

Eating bland and basic foods during a flare. No spices and certainly no acids. I stick to meat/chicken cooked in water and a little salt. Oats and rice and vegetables. Tuna/sardines

I would eat supper and drink my slippery elm concoction drink an hour later. An hour before bed I would take 30 mg of h2 blocker ( Pepcid AC). It comes in a dosage of 20 mg and 10mg so I combined it to make 30. The study i read said 40 mg was most effective but I'm petite and 30mg works great for me.

I would take 30mg for two weeks and then reduce to 20mg for a week and reduce 10mg for a week and then reduce to 5 mg another week and then stop. Its extremely important to gradually reduce and not stop cold turkey. This whole period you're still drinking the slippery elm while reducing the med. Continue drinking the slippery elm a week or two later and then stop. Hopefully your lining has had enough time to heal by then.

To make the slippery elm drink:

Pour slightly hot water from the kettle into a mug that has 1 tabspoon of slippery elm and stir. Let it cool down and drink.

Also I would highly recommend you research the benefits of dgl for gastritis. If you end up purchasing it, I prefer a very low dose of 75mg

Even if you have low stomach acid your lining needs a break to heal that's why I suggested a few options. Personally I couldn't tolerate the betaine HCL at any dosage. The lowest I tried was 50 but it would cause me pain. My doctor recommended ox bile and I was able to handle it better but when I have a flare up, I go off it as well to let my lining heal.

If your pain continues I would highly suggest you stop taking the hcl and see if it's the cause.

Licorice root supplements havent had the blood pressure affecting properties removed so hopefully you dont have any issues with blood pressure.

It’s the same ache that I’ve had before I started any supplements so I think its unlikely to be related to the hci sd I’ve started them at 1/2 a tablet with food .I thought that the licorice DGL was ok to take ?

Davina, I think I've been gifted with all the PA associated digestive issues. One being I could literally not hold anything down. my food would just sit in my stomach and about 30 minutes after each meal I would vomit. OK maybe TMI 🙃 I lost 90 pounds before we figured out I had zero stomach acid (previously I was erroneously prescribed a PPI). So I started on the following and take these before each meal:

- 1 capsule - Betaine HCL 1.3g from Integrative Therapeutics

- 2 tablets - PanPlex 2-Phase This has 320 mg of HCL, 220 mg of Pepsin, 200 mg L-Glutamic Acid, plus other digestive enzymes Pancreatin, Amylase, Protease, and Lipase. from Integrative Therapeutics

- 1 Capsule - Gastric Repair Complex this has deglycyrrhizinated Licorice 500 mg, Mastic 100 mg , Aloe 100 mg, Bizmuth Citrate 100 mg, Sodium Bicarbonate 100 mg, Potassium Bicarbonate 100 mg. from Biogenesis

- 2 Gelcaps - Aloa Vera Gels, Organic Aloe Vera 100 mg from Protocol for life balance

Then immediately following my meal I take:

- 1 chew tablet - Rhizinate - Glycine 150 mg, and Deglycrrhizinated Licorice 75 mg

Once I started taking these my vomiting stopped and I was able to eat again and since have gained 20 lbs back.

But with that I still had occasional stomach issues maybe similar to what you're are feeling feels like an upset stomach with some pain. So now I am seeing a naturopathic medicine doctor who is trained both like a medical doctor with a holistic and natural medicine twist along with nutrition.

I now have had to cut out Gluten, Dairy, Sugar, Caffeine and then I guess sort of a FODMAP inclusive diet but more intense as I had my food sensitivities tested which revealed not only gluten and dairy but a lot of other foods that I was not aware of. So I am now two months into a highly restricted elimination diet where you pretty much cut everything out for one month. I ate just non processed meat with no seasoning and steamed broccoli...YUK! That was an extremely hard part of this diet BUT I noticed after a week or so I felt so much better! No more stomach aches. Now I am adding things back in one at a time and logging everything about what I ate, when I ate it and how I feel including any sensations. I found that I am definitely gluten and dairy sensitive, and something that surprised me was Pinto Beans I had a terrible reaction. Funny I love pinto beans and have eaten them all my life.

I think best for you to keep a journal document what you eat and when you eat it and how it affects you. I found that when I ate Gluten which I never touch any longer my neuropathy in my legs and feet became extremely painful like a thousand minions stabbing me with ice picks. A great incentive to not eat Gluten! That's good for another story though.

That's a very long winded non answer! 😜
