Hi,

I am new here so not entirely sure anyone can help.

In 3 months my ferritin dropped from high over range 179 to within range 118 so a total of 61 points.

My iron saturation level also appearing as low.

I will attach results.

Any help or information greatly appreciated thank you ~

All I know is ferritin raises with infection or inflammation.

Also raises when pregnant.

Then it drops.

So there are fluctuations.

Thd main thing is for whatever reason your bloods were ordered get an explanation from the doctor looking at them.

As ferritin only part of the iron picture

I'm bleeding from the back passage and had a Colonoscopy which found a 1.5cm growth by my junction of the small and large bowel and vicinity of the cecum/appendix. I'm trying to go Private to have it removed for biopsy, just in that process.

Inflammation sounds like a valid reason for an increased level, I have alot of inflamation and pain and bleeding.

The GP, unfortunately has been absolutely no help and December results of low iron saturation, has not been treated.

I was wondering should low iron saturation level be treated with iron?

Thank you for your reply.

K.

I hope you get sorted soon. Just keep asking about iron.

Scientist, not medic.

It reads like you've answered your own question. Chronic blood loss [as you describe] leads to iron deficiency, and that is shown with a falling serum ferritin and reduced transferrin saturation.

Good luck with the surgical referral; it's a very sensible approach.

Once the chronic blood loss is sorted then your iron status should recover.

Ferritin can also be raised from drinking alcohol regularly

Really! Not sure good reason to start drinking

Tempting as it sounds

Seriously do you mean malt beers or stout?

Haha nope dont start drinking. Too much alcohol can leave you with too much Iron. This is coming from a recovering alcoholic and my Ferritin at one point was 500 but it only stayed that way for a week at my worst time drinking. I quit alcohol after that and it's been low ever since bit now it's too low.

You learn something new every day! But as alcohol doesn't agree with me I'll stick to spa tone when needed.
