B12 & beauty industry .. rant

Feeling angry now that my daughter who I now supply with B12 (as I SI) and her GP is aware, current ongoing situation. I find that Her dad's girlfriend in The Beauty industry is using B12 and that last year she also gave my daughter B12 tablets with additional folic acid and overdosed her! Her GP noticed she had high levels of folic acid and wrote her to stop immediately. (I've seen the letter) How can the beauty industry not know about the balance of folic acid and B12.

I would like to write a short reference letter to my daughter, rather than get angry and shout down the phone, about the rights and wrong of B12 and Folic acid, and the correct amounts. (Hoping she shares with her Dad's girlfriend)

I have also found out a friend was encouraged by beautician to have 13 injections of B12, even though she said she felt no difference after each one, surely the liver can only store so much? Also would she now be depleted in folic acid after so many injections?

Sorry about the rant, any links or information to share would be very much appreciated.

I hope one day we can buy B12 OTC.

One word ....... disgusting

It's wrong that the beauty industry can use b12 , do they really know what they are doing!

in reply to

It's so wrong we can't buy it OTC. Yet beauticians can profit from it.

in reply to

Totally wrong, even if drs gave us a document which would clear us to buy o.t.c ., it wouldn't be so bad !

B12 cannot be overdosed either in tablet form , or by injection .B UT folic acid ( that’s folate or VitaminB9 ) certainly can . It can cause real damage .A dose of 400mcg daily is more than enough .Folate is not overdosed in the form of food . It’s just crazy that Beauty parlours can administer B12. But it’s totally legal if the reason given for injection is say — weight loss or anti ageing .! Daftness lives !

Also gives people a false impression of B12

Yes , absolutely. I often think that doctors believe that P.A. patients ask for extra injections because beauty salons advertise that their B12 injections help with weight loss and are anti-ageing .

Thank you, as I thought. What happens if you don't take folic acid whilst having B12?. Shouldn't the beauty industry give advise in that if there is a negative impact?

If you eat plenty of foods that contain a good amount of folic acid ( called folate in food ) there is no need to supplement with folic acid . You cannot overdose on folate in food . But many people do not get enough in their diet -Green leafy vegetables , peas etc and fruits . So it is wise to take a modest supplement of 400mcg , an amount that is recommended to pregnant women to avoid damage to the foetus ( Spina Bifida is caused by mother’s lack of Folic acid/Folate .) Folic acid can be overdosed with unpleasant consequences. High doses should only be taken on a doctor’s advice for a short period .

The beauty industry is irresponsible , and doesn’t have the knowledge to advise clients about their health . . It makes huge profits from B12 injections. The ampoule, needles , syringe and swab cost me about £1.50 It takes about 5 minutes to inject . Beauty clinics etc can buy in large quantities for less . There was a report from a member on here that she had been receiving B12 injections that contained folic acid from a beauty salon , which resulted in problems . I have noticed these ampoules on the German online pharmacies sites . So don’t order those for goodness sake .

in reply to wedgewood

Thank you, I have ordered the ones from Germany highly recommended on here, along with needles and syringes from medisave, been using these for a while and been great, thanks for your support.

Excess B12 will be removed from the blood - however the time this takes is very variable from indiviual to individual - though it would average 2-3 months - but some remove it much quicker and others can be much slower - years. The treatment for cyanide poisoning is 5000x a 1mg injection administered intravenously with a second dosage after 30 minutes. This is the treatment of choice because of the lack of toxicity - though it does bring risks of hypertension from the amount of fluid being introduced.

Recommended upper daily limit for folic acid is something like 1000mcg - as this seems to be the limit above which it interferes with methylation processes and stops them running properly.

Thank you, very interesting. How much can our liver store ( I guess it changes from person to person) so someone paying for 13 injections is just wasteful, and does it deplete their folic acid, so would you need to take a supplement? If so the beauty industry need to advise the same.

Surely if a person feels a benefit from a beautician giving a B12 injections, it means they were deficient anyway and should speak their GP

Thinking out loud and typing...

P.s. what an incredible group, thank you!

Storage in the liver is a little irrelevant if you have an absorption problem as you are unable to access it. If you are healthy then in theory you store about 3 years worth of b12 in your liver but it really is up to individuals whether they want to go for spa type treatments and that's how B12 is seen in those contexts.

in reply to Gambit62

The Beauty industry wouldn't make much money if clients went once every 3 years 😅.. thank you

in reply to Gambit62

You say that the liver can have upto 3 years of b12 in store. The fact that many people take years of intensive treatment before returning to reasonable health. Is it a possibility when starting out on B12 injections all the tissues are fighting for their fair share and once tissues (muscles nerves etc) get what is needed for functioning then the liver will be able to top up, therefore one can reduce the amount of b12, but obviously maintain enough to function properly. Or is a case that no matter how much you inject your body will want more and more.

Storage of B12 in the liver of P.A, patients is of no use at all .They cannot absorb it -it is secreted into their stomachs , not into their blood .

in reply to wedgewood

Oh my brain ! Not functioning , will have to give it a rest !Make sense, perhaps we could retrain the liver to go direct to the blood !😂😂
