Can this be due to B12 I.

My daughter has been having loading B12 for the last week. Her bloods showed B12 169 and Hb 10, ferritin 15 and other tests all skewed. Prior to this being discovered She has had neuropathy in one leg thought to be due to a back problem ( prolapsed disc). Since starting the B12 shots the neuropathy has worsened a great deal and now she has constant tingling in both legs, which is driving her mad. Her GP thinks it's unlikely due to the injections but a flare up of her back trouble. I'm wondering if there could be 2 things going on here. We suspect she has had the deficiency for years as a B12 7 years ago was 170 and she was just told to take oral B12 for a couple of months, despite a strong family History of PA. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks

Neurological problems caused by B12 tend to be symmetric. The fact that earlier problems weren't symmetric suggests that they probably werent caused by B12 deficiency.Please note that it isn't uncommon for neurological symptoms to get worse before they get better, and this may be why your daughter is experiencing the issue with her legs at the moment, as she is starting on loading doses. One of the processes that uses B12 is the one that resets neurotransmitters - when this starts to work again because there is enough B12 for it to run the brain still takes a while to adjust so it is overly sensitive to signals and as pain is actually about the way the brain interprets the signals this can mean that there is a period of increased pain until the brain adjusts.

B12 may have been partly involved in the earlier incident (lowering the threshold at which the problem was experienced) but it is unlikely to have been the only thing going on given that the symptoms are reported to be in one leg rather than both.

Want to add that although it is indeed documented that b12 issues do not tend to be one-sided, mine were. And I have read many other cases on here as well. Most of my issues, 80% left very early with supplementation -after being there for years, making it pretty well a shut case that they were a b12 issue.

And as already noted by Gambit new issues can come during early supplentatiom.

Do know they can leave as quickly as they came.

There must bd a connection somehow.

At the time they thoughg Claudia eqine . Also tested for Addisons before b1e folste ect were discovered.

It wasn't.

Too big a coincidence .

She was in her mid 2o's

Thank you for that. Yes it really does seem a coincidence. She's having awful problems with electric shock sensations in both legs - worse since loading injections. She us in her 40s and finding work and life very difficult and we don't know if it's the disc or the loading. GP says he thinks not the injections but I don't have a lot of faith in their knowledge on this subject!

Perhaps she shoukd get a referral to a neurologist Hopefully it will settle soon.

At my worse earlier this year (before diagnosis), I had chronic electric shock sensations in various places. I also have significant one sided back and hip pain. I’m only one month into injections so it’s too early to tell if the back and hip pain will resolve, but it seems to be lessening. The electric shocks are now gone.

Is she taking folate? She also needs to eat a high potassium diet.
