After reading an article/study I have been taking Yakult now for over 4 weeks for what I thought might be SIBO (diarrhoea for many years which made me feel quite weak - colonoscopy revealed nothing). I take Yakult every morning on an empty stomach and I am happy to say I have now been 'normal' in that area since week 4. This is the link to the study: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...
Hope this helps others too.

Interesting! The only thing I would say is this paper was written in 2008 so if there had been any real progress on this as a treatment then I would have thought it would have happened in the 13 years since! As far as I know, apart from antibiotics there is no real treatment for SIBO, however there have been some good “natural” remedies that have worked with Botanicals. They also have a much better success rate than antibiotics that only seem to last 6 months. There is no info on how long Yakult lasts either. I think I’ll stick to my Bio-Botanical Research Products.
There's another probiotic called Symprove said to do the same as Yakult. I'm in the middle of trying Symprove. There is a trial done by KCH comparing Symprove with placebo here:
The paper you refer to uses breath tests to see if Yakult improve things which seems a more advanced approach.
The best approach might be to do a gut microbiome test before and after the probiotic to see what has changed. Perhaps not viable at the moment but things are clearly going in that direction; you can buy gut microbiome tests from many companies (e.g. atlasbiomed.com/). I'm a bit hesitant as I've no idea what I am buying. Has anyone ever tried these kits?
Professor Spector who ran the British Gut project at KCH (paired with the American Gut project) has started a US/UK company (joinzoe.com/) which looks interesting.
It would be great if you could do a test which would tell if you have a lack of enzymes like Intrinsic factor that you need to have a healthy gut.
Youcan test intrinsic factor easily, your GP will do the test. My Consultant did the SIBO test with breath tests and you can get them fairly easily too. Id quite like to try the Symprove but would like to know how long they expect the results to last after the initial month.
With antibiotics you are lucky to get six months relief before having to take more. I found I got just under a year with my Botanicals before having to start taking some more and the relief was swift so I didnt have to take them for long. They are not cheap so taking them long term for me anyway is not something I can entertain.
If I thought one Yakult a day would do it then thats great but I doubt it would be as simple as that as Im sure our gut would get used to it.
In answer to the above I use the Biocidin drops, olivirex and the GI Detox. That was the regime I was told to use. You start off slowly and then build up. I had quite a fast response and symptoms went away within a couple of weeks. I did it for around three months. I had no breakthrough symptoms for months and when I did I just went back on the regime for a couple of weeks.
The throat spray is also good to have as its an antiviral and Im sure it helped me avoid Covid. Ive read some good papers on it that says it helps kill off flu and throat virus's. There is quite a lot of research that has gone into this company.
You can only test for Intrinsic factor anti bodies and you will find that the PA society says it’s not very accurate.
I am trying Symprove and have tried Yakut before and it didn’t seem to make much difference. There was a review of probiotics research by New Scientist and they thought it inconclusive. The number of startups receiving money to do things with gut micro biome is encouraging.
One thing that I hadn’t realised is that the recommended approach as Moggy1234 says is that you take it first thing in the morning before you eat or drink anything else.
I’m just entering my 3rd week. It’s certainly made me more flatulent but it hasn’t made any difference yet. It has worked for another forum user (wedgewood).
I had a slow (lazy) bowel for most of my life. After a bout of food poisoning on holiday many years ago, every few weeks I get a period of repeated bouts of explosive diarrhoea.
It would be good to hear other people’s gut experiences and how/whetherprobiotics helped.
