Advice Please on B12 injections before and after COVID vaccination

Hello, I haven’t posted in a long while, but read the posts regularly and hope everyone is keeping safe and well and coping during this awful time.

I have my B12 injections weekly , axonal loss and small fibre neuropathy and really when I go for more than 12 days become quite unwell. I also have gluten intolerance, and very ill when gluten. also athropic gastritis with metoplasia.

I have just booked online for the COVID vaccine 65-69 year old programme. It says not to get COVID vaccine if you have had other vaccines within 7 days. Does this apply to B12 injections and how long would I need to wait after I get COVID vaccine before next B12.

My symptoms are quite extreme with permanent nerve damage and if anything causes inflammation, I get locked joints, spasms, boiling water sensation being poured over me or razor blades slashing my legs. So I am both terrified of COVID and the vaccine and just wondering if anyone could give me some advice.

Thank you so much.

Hi

A Vaccination protects against harmful diseases.

B12 is not a Vaccine.

I would however discuss this with the covid team before being vaccinated

No, there is no reason at all why your B12 injections should interfere with the covid-19 vaccines.

Hello Fbirder, thank you for your reply and your reassurance. How long would you suggest waiting after COVID vaccine to take B12 injection. Thank you again.

Take care.

Kind regards

I would be quite happy for them to pump them both in at the exact same time (although in different arms).

Thank you so much for reply beginner 1, this is very reassuring. I had my last B12 last Wednesday and due one this Wednesday but that would have put me 4 days before covid jab and thought this would have been too close and was going to leave it until after my covid jab but that may have taken me up over two weeks gap between b12 and that is too long for me so will rethink this. I hope you are keeping well and safe.

Kind regards

Your body will be able to make the antibodies better and respond in the best way possible if it has all the nutrients it needs to do this.

Your vitamin B12 injection is a vitamin which is a special tiny food ingredient that it needs to be able to work properly.

Just as you don't function so well when you are hungry, neither does your body so make sure you have plenty of B12 before and after your covid vaccination (which is like a set of instructions to your body on how to keep well).

If you don't take one already then you might benefit from taking a broad spectrum A to Z vitamin and mineral supplement every day as well.

You wouldn't skip dinner before building flat pack furniture and you'd be hungry afterwards so think of your body the same and get plenty of B12 (food) before and after your building project (making antibodies against covid).

I am having my first vaccination jab this afternoon and will do my B12 jabs this morning and tomorrow morning.

DO remember to tell the vaccination team about your gluten intolerance and any other allergies or reactions to things you have. They will ask you about them and monitor you afterwards.

Good luck and keep safe! X

Thank you so much Deniseinmilden for your reply and advice. I will now make sure I take my B12 before covid vaccine and afterwards. Again thanks for advice on vitamins. I take lots of vitamins and minerals to support my nervous system and to help my athropic gastritis. I agree with you the foods we eat are so important especially when you are ill. I also make my own sauerkraut, drink kefir daily and eat lots of fruit and vegetables. Also sprout broccoli seeds which I believe have great health benefits. Having said that I am very fragile and easily set back. And yes I will mention intolerances to vaccinators I wish you well for your first jab and that you keep safe and well.

Take care.

Kind regards Potter 🙂

Hi, I had my B12 injection 12 days before my Covid vaccine. All I had was a sore arm for a few days.

HelloMannequin18, thank you very much for reply. This is very reassuring. I will now not worry about taking my B12 before or after vaccine. I hope you continue to keep well and safe.

Take care.

The recommendation in the US is no other vaccine within 14 days. I had a B12 injection on a Sunday and had first dose of Moderna vaccine three days later, no issues. Not only that, but I receive a series of 31 injections every 3 months to control chronic migraine. I had those injections an hour before receiving the moderna vaccine. I was a little worried, but my neurologist said it was fine. The vaccine did make me a little sick—fever, chills, slight dizziness, headache for about a day and a half. However, I am a bit younger than most other people I know who received the first dose and they had no side effects at all. They are in the over 65 group. Good luck with your vaccine!

Thank you mcg-woo for your reply and reassurance. I will not hesitate now to have my B12 injections which I really need. I am glad you had your vaccine without too many issues. Such a worrying time and I think when we are already fragile, well I know I am very twitchy and concerned about reactions to the vaccine. i hope you continue to keep well. So sorry about your chronic migraines, must be very difficult to cope. I really wish you well and hope you keep safe.

Kind regards

You’re welcome. From my experience, the vaccinators are really most concerned with your history of allergic reactions to injections and medications to help gauge whether vaccine is appropriate and how long the patient is monitored following the vaccine-15 mins, no allergies or reactions, 30 mins, allergies and or reactions. Don’t give it another thought. Take your B12 injection! It’s important to stay healthy. I would actually be more concerned not to get the B12 injection as you want to trigger the most robust immune response by being as healthy as possible. I would also be concerned that my side effects would have been more pronounced had my b12 levels not been optimal. I also take 5,000 units of Vitamin D daily for a deficiency—also very important for good immunity. Good luck, relax and get that B12 shot!

Thank you again mcg-woo for taking the time to respond.Yes I agree taking good foods and nutrients is so important when you have health issue. I also take 2000 units vitamin D with vitamin K daily amongst lots of other vitamins. Hopefully these will help my immunity. This is a wonderful forum. I have learned much and been greatly advised over the past 5 years and am so grateful for the support and kindness given always. B12 due tomorrow, covid vaccine booked Sunday. Thank you again and please take care.

It is worth noting that the symptoms experienced with long Covid patients are virtually identical to those experienced by many B12 deficient patients. There is also a suggestion from a laboratory that B12 might help deactivate the virus. The PA society has written to the national medical officers pointing out the comparison and that this is worthy of investigation .

Thank you Retteacher for getting in touch. Very interesting about B12 possibly deactivating the virus. I will definitely look into this. I will make sure I have my B12 injection before and after the covid jab. Hopefully the B12 will also help reduce any adverse affects of the covid vaccine. Please take care and stay safe. Kind regards

A research project was proposed because of the laboratory suggestion, so there will be nothing to find yet. Nor do I think that B12 will help with any vaccination side effects. Both my husband and I had flu like fatigue for a few days after an Astazenica jab. On the otherhand, the PA society was speculating that B12 injections might help reduce long covid symptoms. The real benefit might be that improved MRI scanning and new tests might be developed from research into long covid that can also provide objective evidence of central nervous system stress in B12 deficiency, which will stop some Neurologists from being dismissive of patients symptoms.I am sure your covid jab will go well and help keep you safe.

I know this post is a few months old but I found your reply here interesting. My new doc thinks I am defiantly a Covid long hauler. Got really ill after a short respiratory infection last March. B12 was also low. Doc says Covid can cause all sorts of neurological issues just like B12 def!

So unfortunate that you are a long hauler. That really sucks. I hope you see some improvement soon!!If anything, my b12 deficiency is a big reason why I still stay isolated (also to prevent the spread), and reading your anecdote only makes me feel more certain that staying home is the best for me! The last thing any of us needs is to get covid!
