B12 and COVID injections

Hi everyone,

It’s been ages since I posted but now have a query. I get my b12 every six weeks but after my first COVID-19 injection I was really ill for five weeks. Started to improve slowly then got second COVID-19 injection and a few days later got a blood clot in my eye. Now having to get a course of eyelea injections but have no appetite and body hurts so much.

I still have 3 weeks before my next b12 injection and feel as though I could do with one now.

Has anyone else felt as though their b12 has been depleted after COVID-19 injection?

Hi there, sorry to hear this. Can you elaborate further? In what way did you feel ill?

Maadkins profile image
Maadkins in reply to Silverfox2

Hi,

Had first injection in morning and by evening started to feel very light headed and husband had to help me to bed. Next day I struggled to get up, felt sick and could barely walk’

Over the next few weeks I didn’t really feel any better with pains circulating round my body. I have fibromyalgia as well as p.a. but it has never felt so bad. Feet and hands have constant tingling and the pain in my feet wakes me every night.

After second injection lost most of my sight in one eye so went to optician who immediately phoned hospital eye dept and they asked me to go there that afternoon. Eye surgeon said I had a large blood clot or retinal vein occlusion and I would need injections in my eye to stop further damage. Got first one two weeks ago and have regained some of my sight

Still get very short of breath and have no energy. Even a walk round the garden is exhausting.

Hope this gives you more idea of how I feel.

I suspect the whole eye problem is a vaccine issue? Also I know this sounds daft but have you been tested for Covid recently?

Maadkins profile image
Maadkins in reply to Silverfox2

No I haven’t been tested. Was told I didn’t need to be tested as I didn’t have COVID symptoms and have had my two injections. I also think it is a vaccine issue and have been trying to speak to my doctor but with no success. I am debating on having some extra b12 done privately to see if that makes me feel better.

Neither of my Covid vaccinations affected my requirement for B12 - had it as per usual regime.

I suspect your symptoms and feeling

ill are from the vaccination itself - I was unwell after both vaccinations.

Silver fox’s suggestion of a Covid test is a good one - full cover is not acquired until 3 weeks after the second vaccination but even then it is possible to still catch Covid (though the likelihood is vastly reduced).

If you continue to feel unwell or get worse please see your GP or access urgent care, if

necessary, especially if breathlessness is a new symptom for you or if it becomes worse if it’s something you usually get.

Any chest pain or inflammatory swellings in legs should be investigated immediately - not suggesting this will happen, just something to be aware of.

Hope pick up soon.

Thanks

Find it impossible to speak to doc as they are always busy.

I know the general malaise I feel is due to the COVID vaccination and last one was a few weeks ago. I do not have the flu injection as I have so many allergies but I thought I should be responsible and have the COVID ones but beginning to wish I hadn’t.

Just wondered if b12 top up would help as I am fed up feeling like this and even my appetite has gone. Just the thought of food makes me feel bad.

Foggyme profile image
FoggymeAdministrator in reply to Maadkins

It took me four weeks to recover from the first vaccination and about the same with the second. It made me pleased I’d had it because if a vaccine can make you feel like that - what on earth would Covid do. It doesn’t bear thinking about! So, I’m very pleased I had it.

B12 won’t help if the symptoms are vaccine related - unfortunately. And as far as I’m aware there isn’t any reason why having the vaccine should increase the requirement for B12.

Know what you mean about having trouble contacting doctors. As above, if things don’t improve or you feel worse, please be persistent and push to get past the receptionist (perhaps tell them you’ve had clots after your vaccination, feel worse, and need professional medical advice - that should shake them up a bit).

If all else fails you can always access medical advice via the 111 helpline number - even during GP opening hours. Please do that if you’re worried and can’t get through to your GP.

And never be worried about attending A & E if you can’t get help anywhere else and you feel it’s an urgent or emergency situation.

Be kind to yourself, take it easy, try not to worry, relax and spoil yourself until you feel better - it will happen.good luck and take care.

Some hospitals have eye emergency casuslty 24hrs

Sorry you've been so ill

I was very ill aftef first astrs zenica had my bloods checked for platelet levels.

Took me 3 weeks to get back to sort of pre vaccine .

I had extra b12 .

Was yours astrs zenica too?

Hooe your eye recovers very quickly.

Very scary.

I still have fatigue on fatigue

Hobsons choice though as you say

Maadkins profile image
Maadkins

Hi,

Yes it was Astra Zeneca injection that I had.

I was hoping to have an extra few injections but the place I get them won’t give me any unless I can give them a letter from my doc and as I can’t get an appointment to see him or speak to him it’s back to square one.

I have no problem seeing anyone at eye clinic but not due back for next eye injection for two weeks but hopefully someone there will tell me if it’s safe to have extra b12 injections if I need them.

Life seems to be so complicated nowadays.

in reply to Maadkins

Oh no! You're the 3rd person I know with eye blood clots since the vaccine!! Hope you are better soon

Maadkins profile image
Maadkins in reply to

When I told the eye specialist that it happened after the second vaccine she gave me a funny look and it made me think it was just me trying to tie the two events up but perhaps now when I next see her I can tell her that other people are experiencing the same thing.

It is scary when it happens but it’s difficult to find someone to discuss it with as it’s hard to get a doctors appointment. Thank goodness for this forum as it’s makes you feel less alone.

Thanks to everyone for their good wishes.

in reply to Maadkins

I know a 34 year teacher who is blind in one eye. The hospital confirmed it was the vaccine, they tried everything to save her sight as partial loss of sight in second eye. Not many medics will discuss it in public sadly through fear.

Tragic, her life now changed forever. The origins of this pandemic has a lot to answer for.

It was the vaccine that did the damage not Covid.

in reply to tomoola

I quite agree, if it wasn't for covid we wouldn't need the vaccine! That was my point.

Sorry, I meant to ask if the people you know with eye blood clots got their sight back and if they are ok now?

in reply to Maadkins

Sadly one definitely not, it has been 4 months, 1 appears OK bit blurry, the other I haven't checked on recently.

Maadkins profile image
Maadkins in reply to

Sorry to hear that. I have got a bit of sight back after the eyelea injection and should have another one in ten days time to prevent any more clots.

I do hope your friends will be ok although I have been told it will take time.

in reply to Maadkins

Keeping my🤞 for all of you!

in reply to Maadkins

Have you reported this on the Government yellow card system? If not, please do. Only 1% report adverse effects! Currently 1000s of ADRs and deaths growing daily, frightening!! Blood clots is the main concern, I work in this field so regularly look. Hope things improve for you.

Maadkins profile image

Reported after first injection but not after second as I found it rather difficult

Hi,

So sorry to read about what you've been going through. I hope you see more improvement over the next few weeks.

Hidden mentioned the Yellow Card System.

I think that GPs and hospital staff have a responsibility to report vaccine side effects. Perhaps you could ask your GP and eye specialist if they reported the eye clot?

Link to Coronavirus Yellow Card website

coronavirus-yellowcard.mhra...

Above website is specifically for reporting side effects to medicines, vaccines etc used in coronavirus treatment to MHRA.

MHRA (Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency)

Maadkins in reply to Sleepybunny

Thanks. Will ask the hospital if they reported it as I cannot get an appointment to speak to my doc. Have tried through the link you sent to report it myself but only get so far and it won’t let me get any further. With only partial sight at the moment it is too difficult to keep trying.

I had my first vaccine (AZ) in Feb & second in May and I'm just not tip top. I have daily fatigue, slight breathlessness, nausea & low grade headache. I also developed a heart murmur but have been checked out in that dept & given the ok.I feel a bit like I did prior to starting b12 & folate treatment in 2017 (although nothing like as severe as I was then) and it has rocked my boat a bit I have to say.

I inject b12 weekly and was really feeling quite well until the vaccines. However rather this than Covid 🤔

Hope you feel better soon 🤗

in reply to Choox

Please report on the Government yellow card system if you haven't done so already.

I haven't, but I see there is a link above so I'll do it today.

Many and likely most vaccine side effects don't get reported by hospitals or doctors, so it is up to the vaccinated or their personal representatives to make sure that a report is made.

Hi, I have had all sorts of issues since my second astrazenica injection, I have basically felt that the injection stripped my body of b12, very very odd, my worst symptoms has been very random periods of hyper anxiety, as well as all the symptoms I had prior to diagnosis, inc, unsteady gait, cognitive issues dizziness etc. This all started approx one week after the vaccine

I tried to correct it by injecting b12 daily, but to be honest it made it worse, it wasn't until I decided to up my folate from 400mcg to 2mg that I noticed some improvement, mostly with the wierd anxiety. ( the anxious symptoms were not because I was anxious about anything, they just kept recurring and it was /is horrible)

The other thing I have noticed ( I have hashimotos) , is that I cannot take any thyroxine , when previously on 100mcg. If I did I would imediately get the symptoms of hyperthroid .

Gawd knows to be honest, I have felt terrible and am at my wits end. I have a telephone app with my GP on Friday, I am going to ask for all my levels to be checked

It's horrible to have these relapse feelings isn't it....I asked my GP if any of their other B12 patients had reported any relapse symptoms & she said not...I told her my aunt (also her patient) has had terrible fatigue & mood swings since her AZ vaccines but that she is just 'putting up with it' as she doesn't want to bother the doctor! How many others I wonder are 'just putting up with it'?

Hope you feel better soon 🤗

Nackapan profile image

Hope you had some explanations from your Gp Also you have improved.

I've been struggling to get back to pre vaccine I expect when a condition ongoing is something else's for your body to deal with causing a relapse.

I'm due second astra zenica .

Let us know how you are getting on.

Hopefully in time your body xsn get back in dome sort if balance TC

Can’t even get an appointment to speak to g.p. Will speak to consultant at hospital when I go next month. My pernicious anaemia was manageable until I got the Astra Zeneca injections but since first one in February I have just felt so rubbish with one problem after another. My husbands friend has had blood clots in his leg since he got his COVID injections. Makes me wonder if the injection does aggravate pre existing conditions.

Thanks for your good wishes 👍

Are you able to get your vitamin D checked?

Maadkins profile image

Can’t get it checked as can’t get a doctors appointment. I do take vitamin d tablets though.

Can absolutely agree with everything you've said Maadkins - had eye heamorraghes in the 3rd, 4th and 5th weeks after the first jab, and within 72 hours of the 2nd jab. It was the AstraZeneca one. Had a telephone appointment with surgery and was so worried after the 2nd jab, called again and had a response from the on-call GP who categorically advised not to have AZ booster if offered. Bloods revealed platelet disturbance too. So also advised not to take any aspirin, ibuprofen or diclofenac pain relief either in tablet form or gel/cream. Saw optician too on both occasions to check eye health generally. Fortunately they confirmed my eyes were ok, and lucky not to have further damage. Felt unwell for six weeks after first jab, flu-like symptoms, aches in muscles, and worst of all the feeling of something crawling across my skin and also itching which was sharp and painful - all over my body - it even woke me up! Have reported both incidents on the Yellow Card scheme. Whether this is just the AZ Covid jab or there is any link with PA I don't know - the on-call GP hadn't a clue about PA and said perhaps I needed to take iron!!! (I give up - seriously!!??) I do hope you are feeling better now. It is very worrying that although we are protected now by the vaccine I am very concerned at the possible side effects down the line - after all we are really all part of one global medical experiment. Take care.

Maadkins profile image
Maadkins in reply to JanCymru

Thanks for your reply. At least I know now that someone else went through the same things that eye did and it’s not just imagination. I’m sorry though that you had to go through it all.

I haven’t been able to speak to anyone at my doctors surgery but had already made up my mind not to have a booster jab if it is offered. I don’t go to crowded places or enclosed spaces other than supermarket once a week so don’t think a booster would benefit me in any way and I’m not willing to go through anymore problems with a third jab.

It is going to be a while before I know how much damage has been done to my sight as I have to have a monthly eye injection for three months before they re assess it.

I do hope you feel better and take care of yourself.

JanCymru profile image
JanCymru in reply to Maadkins

I do hope you feel better too Maadkins, and that your eye health improves and gets back to normal - you've certainly had a more severe reaction than me. Have you reported on the Yellow Card scheme? If not, I'd recommend that you do as the more information that is reported about side effects the better the overall picture will be. If you do report it you will need to scroll down the list of conditions under 'eye' and the term you are looking for is " subconjunctival haemorrhage" and any other term that you have been given. I took ages trying to find 'eye bleed' before I Googled the correct terminology to input!! My optician was the most helpful in terms of reassurance and he did let me know that I wasn't the only one turning up with the same condition. At my branch of Vision Express he advised that they had around 20 people report 'eye bleeds' all within Week 4, 5 and 6 of the first jab, and within 72hrs to a week of having the 2nd jab. He said they were now collating information from all branches in the UK to pass on to the relevant authorities. As to GP surgeries, I only had a telephone conversation - no real help. And no on-going monitoring either. Feeling very apprehensive about whether to have any booster that is offered and certainly will be refusing the AZ one. I'm concerned at the cumulative effect of whatever caused the eye bleeds. I've also noticed that since the jabs I bruise far more easily than previously so that is a concern too, and I certainly feel it is a bit of a red flag warning that something has altered my body in some way. Wishing you well over the coming months - don't hesitate to keep in touch. 😀

Hi

Tried twice to report on yellow card but got so far and was then bumped off the site.

Will ask if hospital will report it. Doctor is a waste of time as we can’t get to speak to or see anyone if they don’t think it is life threatening.

Thanks for your good wishes.

JanCymru profile image
JanCymru in reply to Maadkins

Do ask someone to report it Maadkins, the more evidence the better. Still very concerning that despite reporting to surgery and Yellow Card, and asking for monitoring etc, no-one has come back to me. It makes you feel very isolated and that no-one gives a flying f**t. xx

Male relative in his thirties in hospital after 2nd astra zenica vaccine blood clots on his lungs.Hospital claimed he was too young !

JanCymru profile image
JanCymru in reply to

So sorry to learn of that and wish them well soon. Really worrying situation - a friend who has a colleague in her late thirties also had to be admitted to hospital with lung clots very recently after 2nd jab. I'm hoping that copious reporting will alert the medical profession to this worrying trend.

in reply to JanCymru

Its frightening to think that for some this vaccine has had a negative effect. I think reporting is essential, but one that the medical profession might put down too other unknowns!

As with all medicines or procedures there is an element of risk..... unfortunately.

JanCymru profile image
JanCymru in reply to

Totally agree Sallyannl, I know as a world we were in a race against this virus threat, and the development of the vaccine has been achieved at a startling pace, but as you say there is a downside for some. Here's hoping that most side effects are minimal weighed against the benefits. Fingers crossed all round!
