Does anyone suffer extreme anxiety after vitamin b injection? I have had anxiety for years but I have recently had my first injection and I feel as if I have got so much adrenaline going through me. I cannot eat and I cannot relax

What type of B12? I have a similar reaction to methylcobalamin, but not hydroxocobalamin or cyanocobalamin.

I’m not sure I will have to ask the doctor but that’s interesting. Thank you for taking the time and replying to me. X

As it was your first injection , I would put it down to stress , especially as you have been suffering with anxiety for years . Also, your anxiety has been a symptom of B12 deficiency , and now you have started treatment , I’m sure that it will start to disappear . But it is fairly common for symptoms of B12 deficiency to get worse before they get better, when treatment is first started . So do not be discouraged , and do keep up the injections with a daily 400mcg tablet of folic acid . Best wishes and Happy New Year.

I can understand your being scared . I hope that you can gather the strength to carry on with your injections . B12 injections are the quickest and most effective way to absorb this vitamin . Fbirder has a good suggestion . If you are in the UK, Hydroxocobalamin is more than likely to be the B12 used. But some people can absorb a little B12 from sub-lingual B12 lozenges . Theses are Methylcobalamin . You could try them (Amazon) Also you could try a B12 nose / mouth spray also Methylcobalamin ( Amazon) Anxiety is a common symptom of B12 deficiency. Have you been diagnosed with Pernicious Anaemia?

Yes I was told when I was having the injection on 23rd Dec. How long does the feelings of extreme energy last ?

When dealing with symptoms ,reactions etc with P.A. patients It is impossible to give any exact information ,as we are all so different . That’s what makes P.A. So difficult for patients ,as the medical profession has little understanding of that . Do tell us if you are in the USA , or another country . I looked you up and it doesn’t state what country that you are in . In the U.K. a pernicious anaemia patient gets 6 “loading doses” in 2 weeks . ( only 5 if you are unfortunate enough to live in Gloucestershire , the county with the worst reputation for treating P.A. ) Thereafter , one injection every 3months , or 2 months if you have neurological symptoms. Many doctors will deny that your neurological symptoms are such symptoms ( my totally numb feet were “idiopathic “ -yes I live in Gloucestershire )

I felt very well after 5 loading doses , but quickly reverted to my original state.I could not stay well for 3 months or even 2 . I was obviously an Hypochondriac. That’s when I realised I had to treat myself and started self -injecting . ( I luckily alighted on P.A.S. ) I inject weekly ,and keep well . My feet have recovered from total numbness . They just have a burning feeling , which is permanent after 5 years of injecting .

I cannot say that I had a feeling of “extreme energy “ as you describe it . After 5 loading injections , I felt mentally normal without the exhaustion , anxiety , confusion and breathlessness that I had previously . But they swiftly started to return .

So we have different experiences ,which doesn’t surprise me . If you read posts on this forum , you will know how people differ in symptoms and experiences . I wish that someone with an identical experience to yours would respond to you .

But do not despair . Keep posting , and eventually you will get help . I wish that I could be of more help to you . Try a fresh posting - This one will disappear into the morass of posting soon . Also when folk see that you have had plenty of replies ,they will think that you have found help and probably won’t bother to look . Best wishes .

Hi Jc102, that doesn't sound pleasant! I had experience of some anxiety before I found out I had been low B12 for so many years. Things that have helped me are 1. Exercise, getting the heart and oxygen going round and 2. St. Johns Wort herb. However it's quite a strong herb and you definitely can't take it with any anti depressant medication (apparently it's banned in France for that reason) and also it can increase blood pressure. Also I do relaxation techniques there's so much on the internet. Hope your symptoms get better when the b12 kicks in, good luck

I've had a similar problem with Methylcobalamin (as FBirder said, check what type of injection they were giving you). Used to be able to take it fine, then injections were stopped for some time and got really ill. Then when restarted, my system had a horrible reaction to them: anxiety and extreme weakness. Changed to Hydroxocobalamin and was fine.

Took Methylcobalamin again today for the first time in ages (instead of my usual Hydroxocobalamin) and feel okay this time. [Update a few hours later - don't feel okay, will continue to avoid Methylcobalamin :-) ]

Goodness only knows why I had that reaction, but worth trying a different type of injection. Or if that's not easily possible, give it another try. I've also experienced things getting worse before they get better. But they do get better eventually.

Wishing you all the best.

When you get any injection your body responds by squirting adrenaline straight into your blood stream. This gives you a big stimulus with increased blood pressure, pulse etc. It's called the "fight or flight" reflex. I suspect that is what you are feeling and of course if we do not recognise the cause then we worry about it - then worry some more. I suggest that acknowledging this and welcoming the extra energy might just help. Happy and Safe New Year.
