B12 deficiency?

Hello there,

I have recently had 2nd set of bloods done. My first ones showed that I was folate deficient. I have recently changed my diet to help.

In my recent blood results, the doctor told me that my B12 levels were good and the folate levels were back up.

But I am still having symptoms!

Numbness and tingling in my legs, fatigue, Dizziness, ringing in ears ect, headaches

I am being sent for opticians, scans ect to rule out anything big. My anxiety has been really high past few weeks, especially with all this going on which has prob not helped. I just feel like running around in circles getting nowhere. Absolutely knackered and interfering with family life and relationship!

Is it possible to have 'normal' B12 results but still be deficient? I am sure I have seen something about it on here!

Sorry for my little rant and thank you for listening!

I would get a copy of your blood results.B12 if on the low side shoukd be treated before folate. So assuming the doctors do that it would indicate your b12 is in range if your diet only raised folate levels coukd your diet only or oral supplements raise your b12 ?

Was anything tested like thyroid or iron?

Thete is something called functional b12 deficiency.

I have not been taking B12 supplements, I didn't realise that could? By thyroid test, do you mean TSH? I think they were 'in range'! Iron levels were good. I have previous bloods, I will request most recent too, especially as a comparison.

Just frustrating as 27yo and right now feel like old and run down :(

Like tonight, it is 6pm and I feel like I could sleep.

Thank you for your help 😊

Yes good to get your results. Some doctors say in range but it can mean bottom of range . People can operate at different levels. So by getting 2 sets of results so you can see for yourself. Then back to Gp if symptoms persist.

God know little about b12 deficiency and rely too much on numbers.

Shoukd go by symptoms and rule things out .

Ask to see a neurologist for your numbness and tingling. They should be able to decide if its the sort of neuropathy associated with a B12 deficiency.

Do I just request this through my GP?

Yes,

Explain that you're worried it may be something nasty and the only way you'll stop worrying is the get a diagnosis from an expert.

Brilliant, I will ask for a referral!

Definitely push to see a Neurologist. My daughter is around your age. She was given an ME diagnosis but given her borderline B12 levels and my history, I was convinced it was B12, symptoms were so similar to mine before treatment. Her Doctor started treating her like a hyperchondriac so she paid for an online consultation with a Bupa GP which led to an urgent Neurologist appointment. He was amazing and knew pretty much straight away that what she had was hemiplegic migraine. She has been given her life back. Good luck, I hope you find answers and start to feel better soon ❤️

I have had neurology appointment and he said it sounds like migraines and told me they can do funny things to the body such as tingling ect. He sent me for brain scan just to be on safe side. What did the doctors do to help daughter? If you don't mind me asking, just wanna be armed with as much as can to go tell doctor how I would like to proceed 😉

Hi, glad that you have a diagnosis. My daughter is on propranolol now and feels so much better. She has hemiplegic migraine so the treatment might be different depending which type you have. I hope this is your answer too and you'll soon feel much better. Take care xx
