Sick after b12 self inject

Hi, I have been self injecting the past few months (bi monthly). I have just injected and went light headed and vomited straight after. Is this anything to worry about?

Hi cmds

Have you felt nauseous after many of the previous injections and is there any difference in type of B12 vial from the others?

I am not a medically trained person but wonder if there may be a simple explanation.

I wish you well

cmds. In short, if you have been self-injecting for many months without any detrimental effect, then the dizziness and sudden vomiting is most likely to be a coincidence rather than caused by the B12 injection.

Anaphylaxis - a very rare severe reaction to B12 injections - occurs very quickly, this does not appear to be what you are describing. Side effects to B12 take much longer to develop - and again (with the exception of skin eruptions - which some report - are more common but usually settle over time). Side effects are again, quite rare.

We often get questions in the forum about side effects from B12 injections so it’s worth noting that many of the side effects of B12 injections listed in patient information leaflets (PIL's) are also the symptoms of B12 deficiency. Since symptoms often get worse before they get better once treatment commences, it’s therefore common for an in increase in symptoms to be mistaken for side effects from the injection...these are then reported and get listed, as a matter of course, as side effects...which then appear in the PIL's.

So... very unlikely that there's anything to worry about. But if you continue to feel worried or you feel worse, it would be worth seeking medical advice - if only to rule out other potential underlying causes or to put your mind at rest.

How are you this morning?

Thanks all. I'm ok this morning. The spot where I injected hurts more than usual. Wondering if I didn't push the needle in far enough? This is my forth self inject and have previously receiving injections from the nurse. They wouldn't increase the frequency so started self injecting

That’s good that you feel ok. Some injections feel worse than others - depends on how relaxed you are, area of body, depth of needle and the speed of pressing the plunger. 😊

I have felt faint and sick after self injecting B12. I think with me it is down to the concentration needed to fill the syringe and inject. I haven't been doing it long and I noticed I am holding my breath during the filling and plunging stages. It's not painful, just stressful.

Hopefully a one off. Hope the next one girs well. I was only I'll after 2 and discovered it was a certain brand. I'm fine with 4 other bands used

Sticking something sharp into yourself is not a natural thing to do so I'm guessing you might have had a stress related reaction. I was pretty nervous the first few times, especially the first one, but now after 16 or so I'm much more relaxed about it. Try to have a distraction like a radio on when you inject - This works for me. If it happens again though, have a word with your GP.

I have also come close to throwing up. I think it's fear and it's worse if I get a spot of blood. I seem to have an automatic reaction to blood which makes me feel very faint.

Thanks all. I think I'm going to see if a friend will do it for me in the future
