When will hair loss stop?

My daughter has been very upset. She had finished her injections three weeks and she will have another one in two days time. But she is still losing a lot of hair. I m finding it hard to reassure her. I feel I should talk the gp again but what should I say? More blood test?

Hi Flinder,

Sorry to hear about your daughter being ill and obviously, being upset at her hair loss. If I remember correctly from previous posts, her ferritin was pretty low as well - 7. This can also be linked to hair loss, I know other members have commented on the connection.

Wishing both of you the best.

She was prescribed with Ferrous but she couldn’t tolerate it even the liquid form. So she has been taking Spatone. But I think Spatone May not be strong enough. Does anyone how to make Ferrous more tolerable?

Hi Flinder,

I know of someone who was severely anemic her entire life. Pica as a child. Is an athlete and nothing worked to raise her levels and she tried everything.

This did pretty well instantly - carao juice. It is a staple in Costa Rica.

Here is one supplier -

tropicalhealthfoods.com/

It is a family run business that is on Amazon as well.

I have used it as well but haven't in years due to cost. If I had the money I would be taking it every single day. Some days I would forget I took it and feel like superwoman in a workout and go "Oh!"

Warning - For some people it has a putrid taste and smell. I had no issue. Listing because you talked about tolerating the other choices.

Ferrous what? There are several different ferrous compounds used. Some find one form very much better than another.

The link below has details about iron content of various possible iron supplements.

Some people do far, far better on haem and/or ferritin supplements - whether on their own or (if being properly monitored) alongside other supplements.

I’ve read that it takes a while to kick in (up to 6 months) because the ferritin stores of iron need to restock. I have been taking Megafoods Blood Builder iron supplements for almost 3 months now because my ferritin was low (also experiencing hair loss) as a result of B12 deficiency (suspected PA). Many people say it is the best form of iron supplements because it doesn’t have adverse effects on the stomach, which I agree with.
