Methylcobalamin vs Hydroxocobalamin

I have bought both types of B12 online, the Methylcobalamin from the skin place in Brighton UK and Hydroxocobalamin from the Germany based pharmacies. I was wondering which if any is the better drug? I know the NHS use Hydroxocobalamin but don't trust their reasoning to be much more than for cost. Has anyone tried using both and favoured one or the other? Slightly aside from the topic, should the ampoules of Hydroxocobalamin be stored in the fridge? Many thanks :)

Storage in a dark place under 25 deg

I use Hydroxocobalamin

Methyl sort doesnt suit all. Can have extra side effects

Supposed to be more natural.

No, methylcobalamin is even less natural that cyanocobalamin. It is made by the methylation of cyanocobalamin with methyl iodide (a fairly unpleasant chemical).

"The production of the methylcobalamin form of B12 can be a contaminating process and typically involves using methyl iodide, a very volatile chemical classified as a prop 65 carcinogen, or dimethylsulfate which is another carcinogen and environmentally hazardous material,” said Cai Berg, president of Berg Nutrition. “This is why sometimes you will see the price of vitamin B12 spike in the winter. It’s because factories in other parts of the world must literally shut down for several months due to residents complaining of air pollution."

Oh okay. I dont actually use it.

My sister had methylcobalamin sort of b12 capsules (wild nutrition) I wrongly assumed as vegetarian a more natural source. So so expensive too.

I stand corrected.

Try both to figure out which is better for you. I did and realised that I feel better after hydroxocobalamin injections.

I found no difference at all , except the price . Arnika pharmacy in Munich manufacture and sell single use Methylcobalamin.ampoules ( probably where that Brighton place gets their supplies . ) You need to phone them or Email them to order - You can’t do it online . But Hydroxocobalamin is my choice of B12 . Some people get a bad reaction from Methylcobalamin...Best wishes .

There is no reason at all why methylcobalamin should be better than hydroxocobalamin. b12science.com/B12Science/D...

I found I respond better to methycobalamin, I don't know why though....

I have stopped using the Hydroxocobalamin as I find it stings like hell. I also feel very ‘rough’ and tired after it - from UK and Germany. The methycobalamin suits me perfectly and I have no reaction or tiredness etc. I order from VitaminB12Online - a wonderful Australian company and would highly recommended. It takes about 3 weeks or so to arrive but ok if you keep a good supply in. I am using it every 2/3 days after loading doses for very slow but continuing improvement.

I do not recommend the methyl, very unstable, can go bad just sitting there, needs to be refrigerated blah blah blah. And on top of that it actually made me feel worse whereas cyano B-12 helped a lot. Hydroxy form is supposed to be just as good as cyano but longer lasting, so I would recommend that for sure. I wouldn’t rely on the methyl B-12. I think the hydroxy is okay at room temp as long as you have a good unit and it doesn’t get hot. Then you may want to refrigerate. The methyl needs refrigeration, and all kinds of B-12 should be protected from light.

Worth checking manufacturers instructions regarding storage. Arnika recommends it’s Methyl is stored at 15-24 degrees C.

I have tried injections every other day of hydroxo, methyl and adenosyl at roughly the same molar amounts for about a month each and could not perceive any difference for me. That doesn't mean it wouldn't be different for someone else because we do not fully understand the overall absorption/mechanism. Remember that adenosylcobalamin solution is slightly unstable at room temperature and must be stored as instructed by Arnika. I found methyl and adenosyl cobalamin stung less when injected fast by the sub cutaneous route but think that is most likely to be due to the different pH of the solution rather than the form of cobalamin.

Cobalamin coenzyme forms are not likely to be superior

to cyano- and hydroxyl-cobalamin in prevention or treatment of cobalamin deficiency

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

And a, slightly, more easy to understand summary - b12science.com/B12Science/D...

While there may be some differences in the distribution of each form after an injection, once the B12 enters the cell, all forms are converted to cob(II)alamin before they go anywhere. They are, therefore, identical in function.

Methyl often considered superior. I take and have found great. Hydro also very good so depends on individual. Hydro is a lot cheaper so maybe preferable if the results are similar. Not sure about cyano. Not spoken to anyone using. It has some bad press online but is widely used so always worth considering.

Good thing is though you have both to compare. If possible your feedback would be great. What strength of methyl did you get as can be as high as 5000 mcg whereas I haven’t heard of hydro above 1000 mcg

The methyl that I get from VitaminB12Online is 500. Wonder if I only took half the 1000 ampoule Hydroxocobalamin it may have a less tiring and ‘rough’ effect on me 🤔🤔

I see. I inject 5000mcg methyl which is obv a lot stronger. I don’t use hydro so not sure but sounds like it maybe worth trying.

Thank you all for you comments, I noticed that my symptoms and energy improved far more with the Methyl, however this could have been due to me being so deplete. When I then switched to the Hydrox I didn't notice such an improvement, which could have been due to me not being so deplete? I guess its an individual thing and I appreciate the info regarding the safety, cost, storage etc.

Could be to do with the strength as well if you were injecting 5mg methyl as oppose to 1mg hydro. All the best
