Hi there

I wondered if anyone has tried acupuncture for their symptoms before, and if so was it helpful?

I’m trying to explore every avenue I can to help support my 17 year old daughter and thought it could be worth considering?

Any thoughts or experiences gratefully received,

Thank you

Good morning Sam2608.

I would agree that acupuncture could help alleviate any pain being experienced but I’d say that she’d need to also have the appropriate treatment for her b12 symtoms to lessen them or even make them disappear.

It wouldn’t do any harm in my opinion but I’d also focus on making sure she’s getting the correct frequency of supplements wether it’s injections or tablets, whichever is appropriate for her particular deficiency.

I’m sure some of our more informative members will be able to give you some good pointers to help you decide.

Best of luck x

Thank you so much for replying 😊

Yes I completely agree about her frequency of treatment and getting that right - she has had loading dose, and then a month of alternate days with some improvement- GP then wanted to try going to 2 monthly, and we have settled on monthly now. She was found I have low b12 (97) last August after having symptoms of breathlessness.

She has some numb patches on and off on her back and that was what I was considering the acupuncture for. She hasn’t seen neurologist but paediatrics came back and said ‘unlikely to be significant neuro issue’ and should be giving tablets not injections! I’m not sure I want to pursue them any further and she is 18 in July so may be better to refer to adult.

It’s a minefield and she has gone from being healthy and robust to just not feeling right seemingly overnight:(

She is also on prescribed iron as ferritin was low too.

I just want to find anything else that might alleviate some of her symptoms.

Thank you - good to know acupuncture shouldn’t be harmful.

I would really think that , as Thrones says , the number 1 concern should be an adequate amount of B12 injections ( which is difficult to obtain) and adequate intake of B9 - called folate in food and folic acid in a tablet .( take modest 400mcg a day ). She should be having injections of B12 at regular enough intervals to keep the symptoms at bay . If that’s difficult , consider self-injecting . Best wishes .m

Thank you for reply 😊

Have written reply above about her current treatment and yes she is now taking folate too. Slowly piecing this together x

It’s really difficult Sam but your in the best place to get advice,I’m a novice at this myself but have been helped so much by the forum members.

I recently had my loading doses and had immediate improvement especially in my balance etc but by day three they had worn off and I’m not due for another three months,I did tell them but no interest,so long story short I got everything I needed to self inject and again after tons of support from members I finally plucked up the courage to do it.im now on my 7th self injection I alternate arms.yesterday I went a walk with hubby along a nature reserve with the lake running beside us and it was truly magical,my balance was great my steps were secure no wobbling or fear of falling and no gripping on to him for dear life like I usually have to do,it just felt so normal.10 thousand steps later on my Fitbit and a blister on my toe we went and had an ice lolly sat in the car and I felt so happy and normal, yes I was tired last night as expected and again normal but so worth it.

Keep doing what your doing and help her get her young life back again your a wonderful parent.good luck x

Hi Nackapan.

My daughter had just started cranial osteo before lockdown as she walked onto a window last summer and that seemed to be the trigger for her health deteriorating. The osteo said she had sustained a nasty whiplash injury and as she is so young all her reserves have been trying to repair and compensate. GP never pursued this with a scan as she didn’t lose consciousness. I would say there was some improvement with the osteo - then lockdown started ☹️ May be worth a try x

You may have hit the nail on the head there Sam.

I suffered a brain injury after a bad fall I came down on concrete and rebounded twice smashing my forehead open,I had a number of other injuries and also suffered double whiplash, people don’t realise what a serious injury whiplash is.

It’s taken me nearly four years to recover I had such bad cognitive problems and I had a great physiotherapist that I went to,she was so young but really knew her stuff,it took a long time but I’ve made huge improvements but what I did learn was that any kind of head injury regardless of age can damage the pituatory so this could be something else for you to explore via your gp,maybe try and get a referral to a good endo,my recent endo had no hesitation that this was a probability but like you because of lockdown my referrals are on hold but I will pursue.

I’m sorry if I upset you but you are a great parent because your doing what your doing for your child that speaks volumes and you just need a wee bit of support like we all do,you’ll get that here the members are so knowledgable and kind.good luck and well done xx

Ah no you didn’t upset me, I was just very touched 😊

I’m sure I’m not imagining it, but so many people with b12 seemed to have experienced a fall - I guess it’s chicken and egg, as I know poor co ordination can be a symptom..but had never noticed it in my daughter before that accident. Could something like that and the impact and stress it puts on the body be the catalyst. ... but i’m rambling!

Thank you again and lots of luck for your continued improvements x

I also had a bad fall probably because of low b12!!

I'd had lots but the last one was nasty.

I'd been swimming. A5 a garage tripped up on a circle of tape(unbreakable) the sort toh are supposed to cut on unpacking. I know this as along side an NHS job I worked in a shoe shop!

I felt hard on concrete hitting the right side of my face I really thought I'd lost teeth or broken something.

I hD very sore ribs a swollen face swollen knee .

Only one neurologist thought post concussion syndrome in the mix.

I had virtigo 5 weeks after fall for the first time and only thing found was b12 of 106.

So like you say chicken and egg.

If only if only people were tested routinely to no it in the bud.

My youngest daughter undiagnosed and has multiple health problems.

So we do what we can.

Thanks for info on craniel Osteopathy T C

My previous GP gave me 6 treatments for sciatica and it worked really well for me, but agree that she should also have appropriate treatment for B12 symptoms :)

Best wishes
